Bakery Assistant

Job Overview
Seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Bakery Assistant to join the team at a new bakery in town. In this role, you will support the daily operations by assisting in the preparation, presentation and sale of baked goods. This role requires attention to detail, creativity, and ability to maintain a clean and organized workspace. Strong customer service skills, willingness to learn and adapt, and the ability to handle physical tasks are essential for this position.

Duties

Product Preparation and Handling:

• Assist with Fresh Baked Items: Help prepare and handle fresh baked goods, ensuring items meet quality standards.
• Stock displays: Create an aesthetic presentation of baked goods in customer facing display cases, rotating items based on shelf life.

Stock Management:

• Deliveries: Unload and organize bakery deliveries, lifting boxes and items above your head as needed. Utilize step stools or step ladders to reach high shelves.
• Element Exposure: Work in various environments including freezers, coolers, and back workspaces, adhering to safety and cleanliness standards.
• Inventory Management: Conduct inventory counts, manage stock levels, and pull expired inventory.

Customer Service:

· Customer Interaction: Greet customers and offer assistance with their bakery needs, answering questions about product availability and pricing, and offering recommendations.

· Taking payment: Utilize point of sale system and accurately make change for cash transactions.

• Orders: Take orders, ensuring all customer specifications are accurately recorded and fulfilled.

Physical Requirements:

• Lifting: Able to lift boxes/ sacks of ingredients up to 50 lbs safely and efficiently, including lifting items above head.
• Use of Step Stools/Ladders: Use step stools or step ladders to reach and handle high shelves.
• Cleaning: Clean dishes and workspaces, including taking out trash regularly to maintain a sanitary and organized environment.

Other Responsibilities:

• Product Rotation: Ensure proper rotation of products to maintain freshness and quality.
• Adjustments: Make necessary adjustments to product displays and stock levels throughout the day.
• Pan Up: Prepare and set up pans and trays for baking as required.

• Customer Service: Strong customer service skills with the ability to assist and engage with customers effectively.
• Attention to Detail: Ability to follow recipes and instruction, showing a sense of pride in your work.
• Flexibility: Adaptability to adjust product quantities and displays based on customer traffic and sales forecasts.
• Organization: Ability to maintain a clean and organized workspace.
• Basic Decorating: Ability to perform basic decorating tasks once trained
• Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with other team members to achieve goals.
• Independence: Ability to work independently without supervision, demonstrating reliability and self-motivation.
• Physical Stamina: Capability to handle physical tasks including lifting, standing for long periods, and cleaning.

Work Environment:

• Exposure: Frequent exposure to varying temperatures, including warm, steamy, and cold environments in the bakery area. Handling hot trays from the oven.
• Conditions: May involve occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions during curbside deliveries, cleaning and trash removal.
• Element Conditions: Work in different elements including freezers, coolers, and back workspaces, adhering to safety protocols.
• Standing: Capable of standing for extended periods while baking and preparing products or working retail counter.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in the food industry is preferred but not required.
• Basic knowledge of culinary techniques and food production processes.
• Familiarity with food safety practices and proper food handling procedures.
• Ability to use kitchen tools effectively, including knives and other baking equipment.
• Strong attention to detail with a creative flair for cake decorating is a plus.
• Excellent communication skills and a friendly demeanor for customer interaction.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high standards of quality.
