POSITION: Full-Time/ In-Person  
LOCATION: Multnomah County 
TYPICAL HOURS: Monday – Friday 8am – 4.30pm 
SALARY: $21.64/hr. - $23.02/hr. (Bilingual $23.59/hr. - $25.10/hr.

Are you a parent in recovery? Do you have lived experience of addiction, recovery, and DHS child welfare involvement? Come support parents’ efforts to reunite with their children and find their path to recovery. Morrison Child & Family Services is seeking a female identifying person with shared lived experiences of addiction recovery and a closed DHS Child Welfare case.

 The Parent Mentor Program offers a supportive & inspiring workplace for people in recovery, including an employee resource group for staff of color. Our motto is: RECOVERY FIRST-FAMILY SECOND-WORK THIRD! 

Position Summary:

The LIFE Program is a strength-based, trauma informed and culturally responsive approach to working toward permanency for children in foster care, in which mentors and other service providers partner collaboratively with DHS to support families. Empowering and coaching parents through their case with DHS, supporting them at monthly Case Planning Meetings and court hearings, driving parents to appointments, and providing support for other mentors on the team are all important aspects of this work.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop a trusting relationship with assigned parents by providing regular contact and support, including attending court and/or meetings with DHS when requested by parents
  • Communicate positively and professionally with DHS staff and work collaboratively to support families identified for the L.I.F.E. Program
  • Build relationships with Child Welfare staff and serve as a positive representative for the Parent Mentor Program within DHS
  • Assist DHS Child Welfare staff in recognizing issues of addiction and recovery
  • Link parents with treatment services and community resources as needed
  • Support parents in developing positive parenting and making positive choices
  • Empower parents to advocate for themselves and their family by coaching parents in understanding the boundaries and expectations of DHS
  • Demonstrate a commitment to developing a thorough knowledge and application of the Sanctuary model and other organizational policies & practices. 
  • Participate in staff development, in-services, and training related to equity and inclusion in the workplace; model appropriate behaviors; develop, recommend, and implement improvements to business practices with awareness and understanding of the impact in a trauma-informed and culturally diverse organization.

Experience/Education Requirements :

  • Personal experience and knowledge of addiction issues 
  • Minimum 2 years in active recovery from using alcohol and other drugs 
  • Personal experience of a ODHS Child Welfare case, closed for a minimum 1 year required 
  • High School Diploma or GED or high school level writing and reading skills.
Other Requirements: 
  • Position requires personal transportation allowing for regular travel within Multnomah County for meetings and trainings in a timely manner. Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and personal auto liability insurance 
  • Must pass a criminal history check
