The Moscow Food Co-op is seeking a Meat Clerk to join our team! In this role, you'll assist the Meat Manager by cutting, packaging, and maintaining displays of fresh, natural meat products. We’re looking for someone who provides excellent customer service while helping the department meet its goals for quality, sales, margin, and service.
As a Meat Clerk, you’ll work closely with the Meat Manager to support the Co-op’s strategic objectives. Ideal candidates are team players who can follow directions, stay motivated, and work independently at a steady pace. Physical stamina is important, as the role requires standing for up to 8 hours and lifting 50–90 lbs.

This is a part-time (20-29 hrs) position. Shifts are early morning or closing. Days vary and weekends required. Must be available for holidays, university breaks and through the 2025/2026 school year.

Job Description
- Package cuts of meat and value-added meat products for freshness and appeal.
- Display meat department products to give impression of abundance and quality, while maintaining proper storage conditions and rotation.
- Assist customers in prompt, friendly, courteous manner, offering suggestions for purchases and ways to prepare products. Help customers place special orders.
- Ensure that all items are accurately labeled with price and ingredients.
- Maintain sampling stations and offer samples to customers.
- Receiving: Check deliveries for damage, quality and accuracy, notify department manager of discrepancies. Help with unloading as needed. Rotate deliveries into storage.
- Replacement ordering: For products designated by the Meat Manager:
- Place orders to ensure regular supply.
- Receive orders following established procedures.
- Maintain meat displays, freezer, prep and storage areas in clean, orderly condition, meeting health department standards:
- Scrub and rinse blocks, floors, walls, cases following established procedures.
- Take out trash, properly dispose of unsellable meat products.
- Maintain department equipment in working order. Advise Meat Manager of equipment repair or replacement needs.
- Participate in quarterly inventory.
Co-op Performance Standards
Customer Service
- Demonstrate excellent customer skills, both internally and externally; Follow the 10-4 service rule
- Make yourself available to customers; greet each customer promptly with a smile.
- Handle customer complaints and questions courteously.
- Coordinate with all supervisors and leads to address customer concerns, questions or thoughts. i.e., refunds, oops coupons, angry customers, broken machinery etc.
- Help customers place special orders.
- Accurately and completely record special orders and ensure the forms are delivered for processing.
Communication
- Communicate directly and professionally, following the Moscow Food Co-op Coworker Conduct Commitment.
- Stay up to date on information in department log books and other communication.
- Answer and route phone calls according to Moscow Food Co-op procedures.
- Keep a working phone and personal email address for necessary communication from the Co-op.
- Report customer suggestions, comments, and complaints to Mod and Department Manager.
Other Duties
- Work cooperatively with others in the department and throughout store
- Maintain excellent attendance and punctuality; arrive 5 minutes early for scheduled shifts.
- Take breaks according to department and store policy.
- Requests time-off according to department and store policy, arranges subs for scheduled shifts and subs when needed.
- Follows the direction of the Manager on Duty (MOD).
- Carry out established opening and closing procedures.
- Complete Co-op-wide trainings as required.
- Attend all inventories, dept. meetings, and all-staff meetings.
- Participate in department and store-wide initiatives such as Open Book Management and others as they occur.
- Maintain accurate use of the time system, substitute for other staff as needed.
- Ensure a safe working environment for all staff and customers.
- Assist with training new staff when appropriate
Qualifications
- Commitment to the mission and goals of the Moscow Food Co-op.
- Excellent communication skills with an outgoing, friendly, and positive attitude.
- Strong knowledge of meat and seafood products is preferred, including a working knowledge of natural and organic products.
- Highly motivated with a sense of urgency and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with all levels of employees.
- Excellent people skills, including ability to present spoken and written information clearly.
- Organized and able to handle multiple demands.
- Ability to form professional relationships with vendors and producers.
- Reliable, dependable, organized.
- Basic computer and math skills.
- Appropriate food handler's certificate/card.
- High school diploma or equivalent with previous meat packaging and cutting experience in the grocery or restaurant industry preferred.
- Must be 18 years or older to work in the Meat Department.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for long periods and work in subzero temperatures.
- Ability to work in close quarters with other people.
- Regular, predictable attendance including, weekend, evening and holiday work required.
- Must be able to lift and carry between 25 to 90 lbs. on a regular basis.
- Ability and skill to operate equipment used in the meat industry.
- Willingness and ability to meet the changing requirements of the job.
