Overview
The Applebaum Intern for 2025 will work with the Motown Museum’s Collections department staff and assist with cataloging and preservation projects. In addition to working on the assigned projects, the intern(s) will have an opportunity to meet with various staff from the Curatorial and Archives & Collections departments to learn more about their career paths and roles at the Motown Museum.
Project Goals
○ environment and storage requirements for museum collections;
○ condition issues surrounding various material formats;
○ inventory, cataloging, and description of artifacts;
○ researching archival materials and historical records.
The intern must work at least 25 hours/week and be available between June 2nd and July 25th. Interns may work between 9:00am to 5:00pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and/or Thursdays, as arranged with your supervisor.
Location
Work will take place at the Museum Annex in Detroit, Michigan.
Supervision
The intern will report to the Museum Registrar, with oversight from the Director of Collections.
Payment
The intern will receive a $3,000 stipend from the Motown Museum on behalf of the Applebaum Foundation. The first half will be received after the first four weeks have been completed. The remaining balance will be issued upon the internship's completion.
Eligibility
The intern must be a Michigan resident enrolled as a sophomore, junior, or senior in an undergraduate program. Freshman, recent graduates, and graduate students are not eligible for this internship per the Applebaum Foundation eligibility requirements. Additionally, interns are required to attend four programming sessions hosted by the Applebaum Foundation.

- Complete inventories and learn cataloging procedures for Museum artifacts.
- Implement basic preservation strategies, such as condition reporting, rehousing artifacts, and isolating moldy or damaged objects.
- Research collections to improve description and provenance of objects.
- Collection stewardship best practices surrounding the preservation of and access to museum collections, including:
○ environment and storage requirements for museum collections;
○ condition issues surrounding various material formats;
○ inventory, cataloging, and description of artifacts;
○ researching archival materials and historical records.
- Exposure to museum career paths, including preservation, cataloging, archival processing, curation, research, digital curation, digitization, and project management.
