Mott Haven Academy Charter School (Haven Academy) was founded in 2008 and serves students in grades Pre-K through 8. As the first charter school in the country specifically designed to meet the needs of children in the child welfare system, Haven Academy is a one of a kind place that offers passionate educators an opportunity to make a difference in today’s educational landscape.
The role of the Behavior Support Assistant is critical to the academic success and achievement of students enrolled at Haven Academy Charter School. The Behavior Support Assistant will work closely with and support the Behavior and Data Specialists, who are responsible for supporting the behavior and social-emotional growth of our scholars. We are looking for an individual who is seeking a career in behavior/social-emotional learning and who wants to gain experience in data collection, data-based decision making, creating and implementing behavior plans, and problem-solving.
This individual should be familiar with or willing to learn about the following: CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention), FBA and BIP creation, Responsive Classroom, Love and Logic, Trauma Informed Response.
This individual should:
- Interested in pursuing a degree in special education or Applied Behavior Analysis
- Have a strong desire to work within an innovative, urban educational program
- Be data driven and have the knowledge to organize and analyze behavior and social-emotional data
Main Responsibilities:
- Respond to student crisis and outbursts and follow-up with staff and families as necessary
- Collaborate with Behavior Data Specialist (BDS) in responding to student behavior and collecting data
- Use trauma informed strategies to verbally deescalate students in crisis
- Implement logical consequences which include making up missed work and restorative practices
- Follow given schedule to engage in proactive work in the classroom
Other Responsibilities may include:
- Facilitate the problem-solving process with students when needed
- Help introduce and teach new behavior plans to both teachers and students
- Encourage positive interactions between students and adults
- Value and promote peaceful conflict resolution as well as creative and authentic problem solving
- Uphold the school’s system of positive behavior support and logical consequences
- Keep an organized workspace
- Uphold and promote the school’s mission and vision
- Perform other duties as needed to support the ongoing development of Haven Academy (e.g. breakfast, lunch/recess, dismissal, etc.)
