Mount Baker Theatre (MBT) is seeking a diligent and reliable Part-Time Custodian to join our Facilities team and help make great things happen in our gorgeous historic facility!
The MBT organization enriches our region’s culture through dynamic performances, arts education, inspiring engagement in the community and stewardship of a national historic treasure. Built in 1927, the Mount Baker Theatre was one of the last grand vaudeville movie palaces built in the Pacific Northwest. Presenting films, Broadway tours, concerts, dance, speakers, and other live events, MBT preserves history and serves our region’s continuously changing economy and community.
Job Summary
The Custodian position is responsible for maintaining cleanliness, sanitation, and safety standards throughout the historic theater facility. The position requires the individual to be detail-oriented, self-motivated, and able to work independently.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Cleaning and Sanitization: Perform routine cleaning tasks, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and disinfecting surfaces. Ensure that all areas including restrooms, break rooms, and common areas, are always kept clean and sanitary.
- Trash Removal: Empty trash bins and recycling containers regularly and dispose of waste in designated receptacles. Maintain cleanliness and orderliness in trash collection areas.
- Floor Care: Clean and maintain floors, carpets, and floor coverings as needed. This includes spot cleaning, stain removal, and floor polishing to ensure a safe and attractive environment for employees and visitors.
- Restroom Maintenance: Monitor and restock restroom supplies, including toilet paper, hand soap, and paper towels. Ensure restrooms are clean, hygienic, and well-maintained throughout the day.
- Equipment Care: Properly use, handle, and maintain cleaning equipment and supplies, including vacuum cleaners, mops, brooms, and cleaning chemicals. Report any equipment malfunctions or maintenance issues to the Custodian Supervisor promptly.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines while performing cleaning duties. Identify and report any safety hazards or concerns to management to ensure a safe working environment for all staff and visitors.
- Event Custodial: Prepare lobby for public access for events, be prepared to quickly clean up spills or biohazards while the public is in the theatre, restock paper products in restrooms during events to ensure a good customer experience. Return public spaces to event-ready condition prior to the end of work shift.
Required Skills/Abilities
- Ability to work effectively individually (independently) and with a team.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to clean and sanitize washrooms, showers, and dressing rooms.
- Ability to clean office spaces without disturbing office work areas.
- Able to clean all fixtures and furniture safely.
- Ability to operate and maintain Custodial equipment in a clean, safe, and operable
condition.
- Able to finish assigned tasks effectively within limited time.
- Basic understanding of hand tools.
- Reliable Transportation and punctuality are essential.
Required Education and Experience
- 3 to 6 months trained in Custodial methods and processes.
Preferred Education and Experience
- One to two years’ experience in Custodial services.
- Skill in vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and applying finishes on different
flooring materials and stairs.
- Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and the safe use of such chemicals.
- Knowledge of restocking supplies in bathrooms, break rooms, and public areas.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to interact professionally with fellow employees, patrons, volunteers, and any internal and external customers.
Work Schedule
The position will be scheduled to work daytime, evening, and weekend hours. The position will have occasional need for additional evening and weekend hours during periods of frequent events. The schedule will be determined by the Custodian Supervisor or Facilities and Operations Director.
Physical Requirements
Position requires continuous movement with regularly bending, stooping, pushing/pulling, carrying, climbing (ladders), reaching, and lifting. Work requires moving and lifting up to 50 lbs. repeatedly throughout the workday. Need to be able to work at heights up to fifty feet occasionally.
Employment Classification
Non-Exempt Hourly
Full Time - 1 FTE (40 hours/per week) – possible additional hours required based on business demands.
Salary and Benefits
$19.00 - $21.00/hr.
