Position Summary:

Mount Mary University (MMU) invites applicants to apply for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of English beginning in August 2025. This full-time appointment requires a 12-credit per semester teaching load, including a minimum of two composition courses each semester.

Founded in 1913 by the School Sisters of Notre Dame, Mount Mary University lives out its mission today through providing an education that fosters the development of the whole person. In 2020, MMU became one of two colleges in Wisconsin to be federally designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution. According to U.S. News and World Report, the university is also ranked as one of the two most diverse universities in the Midwest. We seek a candidate with expertise in writing pedagogy and a passion for working with first-year students. The successful applicant will collaborate with the Director of Composition to uphold teaching excellence across the writing program as well as work in concert with administrators, other faculty, and support staff to promote retention-boosting efforts. We are especially interested in candidates with qualifications in TESOL, ELL, or English for Academic Purposes. Opportunities to teach in secondary areas within the English program are also available. Desirable secondary specialties include creative writing, digital journalism, and professional writing (e.g., writing for websites, blogs and social media; digital storytelling; technical writing; grant writing).

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Teach undergraduate courses across our first-year writing program, classes at the upper-level in the English program, and our new first-year seminar course
  • Participate in developing, revising, and assessing program curriculum
  • Deliver course content in a variety of formats including in-person, hybrid, and online
  • Provide service to the English program, the School of Arts & Sciences, and the Mount Mary community
  • Engage in ongoing professional development through publication and presentation
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate students within the School of Arts & Sciences
  • Demonstrate an active, on-campus presence and commitment to living out Mount Mary University's values and mission

Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Rhetoric & Composition, Writing Studies, or closely related field (ABD considered if degree is conferred before start date)
  • Experience teaching diverse learners using inclusive and trauma-informed practices
  • A demonstrated commitment to working with first-year university students

  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting inclusiveness and teaching and mentoring a diverse student body.
  • Outstanding verbal, writing, and presentation skills; must be able to communicate and interact effectively with Mount Mary students, employees, and alumnae.
  • Exceptional ability to multitask and prioritize projects.
  • Experience and understanding of current issues and developments in higher education.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to work with diverse groups, facilitate group process and foster collaborative decision-making.
