Essential Duties/ Responsibilities:
- Inspect, test and monitor ski lift machinery and components.
- Execute scheduled maintenance on ski lift machinery and components, tools and buildings.
- Respond to, and determine cause of, lift operational problems. Implement solutions, asking for advice and assistance from Lift Maintenance Supervisor as necessary, to expedite a safe solution or correct lift operator error, explaining problem and solution to the operator.
- Ensure compliance with all resort, department, manufacturer’s recommendation, ANSI B.77 and State Tramway regulations policies, and procedures.
- Act as crew leader and oversee daily tasks of assigned crew members.
- Log, (legibly and accurately) all maintenance and repairs on log sheets and complete scheduled work orders for transfer to maintenance record keeping.
- Participate in training lift operators and less experienced lift maintenance personnel.
Other Responsibilities:
- Operate with little or no daily supervision.
- Inform Lift Maintenance Supervisor of all work in progress and any problems encountered.
- Organize and clean shop and work areas.
- Remove snow from around lift machinery and buildings in winter.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Broad knowledge of ski area and lift operations, ski lift terminology and ANSI B-77 and Utah Tramway Codes. Specific knowledge of Nordic Valley ski lift equipment and operational procedures.
Basic knowledge of mechanical and brake systems, electrical systems and their operation. Understanding of hydraulic repair.
Alertness, precision, ingenuity, memory, concentration, judgment, aesthetic sense, reasoning, initiative, patience, visual discrimination, problem solving, analytic ability, persuasiveness, auditory, tactile and olfactory discrimination, imagination, oral and written communication skills are necessary abilities.
Education or Formal Training: High School diploma or GED preferred. Must have a valid Utah driver’s license.
Experience: At least two years of ski lift or tramway maintenance experience.
Material and Equipment Directly Used: Ski lift machinery and components, including electrical and hydraulic systems, diesel and gas engines, and wire cables: heavy maintenance equipment, hand, air and electric tools, welding torches, snowmobiles, Snow cats, lubricants and solvents.
Constantly listening to machinery sounds and smelling for gases and odors, near and far acuity, depth perception, color and field of vision. 60% of the time noise levels reach 75 - 110 decibels. Constant exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards, high exposed work site, burns and radiant energy. Frequent exposure to fumes, odors and gases. This is a non-skiing position.
Journeyman lift mechanic must be able to perform the following tasks:
Complete summer service on (fixed and detachable). The service includes:
- sheave replacement
- alignment corrections
- cable de-ropement (rigging, towers)
- bushing and bearing replacements
- swing chair corrections
- derailment corrections
- Perform brake test and service. Adjust components as necessary.
- Pull and lower counterweights for carriage adjustments.
- Perform Riblet clip service and preparation for NDT.
- Perform grip service and preparation for NDT.
- Complete haul rope lubrication.
- Troubleshoot basic control and derail indicator failures.
- Service auxiliary power unit.
- Be familiar with all lubricants used in different lift components.
- Service low and high speed couplings.
- Basic carpentry skills.
- Basic hydraulic repair knowledge.
- Basic low voltage and electrical troubleshooting.
- Locate and understand lift diagrams/schematics. Be able to reference corresponding parts catalogues.
Working Environment/ Physical Activities:
20% of the workday is spent indoors: 80% of the work day is spent outdoors in constantly changing weather conditions, including snow, extreme cold and wet in winter. 60% of the day is spent walking, 35% of the day is spent standing and 5% is spent sitting.
