ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF NURSING

POSITION SUMMARY
The Assistant Director of Nursing assists the DON in providing, planning, coordinating and managing nursing care to ensure the nursing department provides consistent, attentive, and efficient quality care to residents. The ADON is responsible for monitoring nursing staff, nursing activities, and patient care as well as ensuring nursing activities are in compliance with federal, state, and local standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Assists in ensuring nursing staff is providing quality and appropriate resident / patient care that meets or exceeds company and regulatory standards.
• May assist with recruiting, hiring, providing orientation/training, and retaining a sufficient number of qualified staff to carry out the responsibilities of nursing services as needed.
• Ensures employee performance meets or exceeds expectations and periodic performance appraisals are conducted on a timely basis.
• Assists with scheduling and performing rounds to monitor and evaluate the quality and appropriateness of nursing care as needed.
• Assists in maintaining administrative authority, responsibility and accountability for the proper charting and documentation of care and of medications and treatments.
• May be responsible for quality assurance, infection control, and the development of staff as determined by the Director of Nursing.
• Helps develop and implement the written staffing plan and nursing schedule that reflects the needs of the resident population.
• Completes required forms and documents in accordance with company policy and state and/or federal regulations.
• Adheres to scope of practice limitations based on qualifications.
• May be required to perform patient care duties.
  • Must possess the knowledge and skills to function in a nurse or nurse aide capacity when needed.
• In the absence of the Director of Nursing, the duties and responsibilities of the DON may be delegated to this position.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF NURSING REQUIREMENTS:

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS
Registered Nurse with experience in long-term care or geriatric nursing. Management or supervisor experience in long-term care or geriatric nursing preferred.

• Proficient in the use of a personal computer.
• Good critical thinking, communication, and leadership skills.
• Good Planning and problem-solving skills.
• Possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such an action.
• Must be knowledgeable of nursing practices and procedures as well as the applicable state laws, regulations, and guidelines governing nursing functions in the long-term care facility.
• Must possess leadership ability and willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise professional and non-professional personnel.

• Must be able to work as part of a health care team to assess resident needs, plan and modify care and implement interventions.
• Must understand and follow company policies, including harassment and complaint procedures.
• Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
• Must be able to effectively direct the daily functions of the unit nurses and CNAs to provide leadership to the floor.
• Must possess the knowledge and skills to function in a nurse or nurse aide capacity when needed.
• Must be knowledgeable of resident rights and ensures an atmosphere which allows for the privacy, dignity, and well-being of all residents in a safe, secure environment.
• Must be able to provide clinical supervision to Unit Nurses and CNA’s.
• Must be able to respond to emergency situations related to resident and staff safety in a leader capacity.
• Must be able to assist in the evacuation of residents.
• Must practice dependable and regular attendance.
• Must be able to communicate and function in an interdisciplinary team.
• Must be able to maintain accurate, detailed reports and records.
• Must be able to instruct/educate individuals and families on topics such as health education, disease prevention, and develop health improvement programs.
• Must be able to work as a team member with all health care team members.
• Must possess superior oral and written communication skills.
