Job Description:
The Special Equipment/Substation Technician performs a variety of maintenance and service work on substations and equipment throughout MVEA’s service territory, along with the following duties:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Programming of various devices, including but not limited to protective relays, wattmeters, battery chargers, throwover switches, and annunciators. Experience with Schweitzer relays is preferred.
- Perform commissioning, testing, maintenance, inspections, and adjustments/repairs on substation equipment, including disconnect switches, circuit switchers, transformers, motor operators, CTs/VTs, voltage regulators, feeder circuit breakers, metal-clad switchgear, battery chargers, and protective relays.
- Interpret electrical drawings, including wiring diagrams and schematics.
- Acquire oil samples for dissolved gas analysis.
- Work with contractors engaged in performing equipment maintenance or repair tasks.
- Maintain inspection, testing, and maintenance records for all work performed on equipment.
- Download event and load data from substation relays and recloser controls.
- Prepare accurate reports of all work performed, including job briefings and D.O.T. inspections.
- Utilize NISC iVUE software to generate purchase requisitions for material and assets.
- Stay up to date on policies, procedures, RUS specifications, National Electrical Safety Code, and other matters related to the assigned work.
Requirements:
- Well-organized, detail-oriented, and able to exercise discretion and sound judgment when dealing with people and confidential information.
- Ability to react to change productively and handle a high workload, with the ability to multi-task and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Must be able to analyze complex technical problems, exercise sound judgment, and arrive at appropriate decisions.
- Must be proficient at operating a computer, including the use of Excel, Power Point, and Word or comparable software programs. Be able to install and use technical software to program and test electronic relays, meters and controls.
- Must have the ability to program and use electronic relays, meters, and test equipment through interfaces provided on the equipment without using a computer interface.
- Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, staking sheets, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Must understand and be able to perform power system calculations including voltage, current, impedance, power, transformation ratios, and three phase voltage and current resultants.
- High School graduate or equivalent. Associates degree in electronics technology or a related field is desirable.
- Two years’ experience working with substation equipment, controls, and relays.
- Experience with line reclosers, regulators and associated controls is highly desirable.
