Barnard Academy and Reading Elementary School are seeking a .70 full-time equivalent (FTE) Guidance Counselor for a shared position. Our programs, in partnership with families and the community, provide high quality opportunities and environments that support each student’s academic, social and emotional well-being. About the Role
The primary role of the Guidance Counselor is to support students’ social emotional learning and well-being. Responsibilities incude:
- Support a culture of explicitly teaching social skills, social thinking, and use of positive discipline and logical consequences.
- Collaborate with parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators to review data and assess student needs and develop support plans for students experiencing social-emotional challenges.
- Serve on PBIS, EST, 504, and crisis teams.
- Coach teachers through the planning and implementation of social thinking and collaborative problem-solving approaches with students.
- Work with students 1:1 or in small groups in de-escalation, self-regulation, collaborative problem-solving and social thinking.
- Support the implementation of district-wide initiatives relative to students’ social-emotional wellbeing.
- Facilitate professional learning experiences for faculty and staff.
What We’re Looking For
The ideal candidate will:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field (Master's degree preferred).
- Hold or be eligible to hold a valid Vermont teaching license with appropriate endorsement.
- Experience working with students with diverse learning needs, including those with social cognition, behavioral, and social-emotional needs.
- Attention to detail.
- Knowledge of evidence-based instructional strategies, assessment methods, and intervention techniques.
- Participation in a professional/teaching-learning community group or similar learning community.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
- Commitment to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in education, and a passion for supporting the academic and social-emotional growth of all students.
