Position OverviewThe Executive Director is responsible for the administration and operations of the Maine Adult Education Association (MAEA) and ensuring the Association's mission, goals, and objectives are effectively implemented. This position reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations, member engagement, professional development, and advocacy for the field of adult education in Maine. The Executive Director is expected to represent MAEA at the state and national levels and must be prepared to travel as needed. This is a part-time position with an expected commitment of 20 hours per week, as outlined in the Work Agreement. The salary for this position is based on years of experience and ranges from $40,000 to $47,000 annually.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
- Experience in adult education is preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including educators, policymakers, and community organizations.
- Strong writing, presentation, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage budgets, fundraising efforts, and staff.
- Proficiency in technology, including the ability to effectively use digital communication tools, manage online platforms, and utilize software for organizational operations.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Leadership and Operations
- Oversee the daily operations of the Association and advocate for the improvement and expansion of adult and community education in Maine.
- Develop and implement strategies for maintaining and increasing membership in collaboration with the MAEA subcommittees.
- Actively promote and facilitate partnerships with organizations that share similar missions and provide leadership for adult education efforts on both state and national levels.
- Prepare and present reports to the Board of Directors before each Board meeting, and create the Association's Annual Report for members.
- Develop and execute a comprehensive communications plan, including newsletters, brochures, and other materials that support MAEA’s mission and activities.
- Implement the state-wide Marketing Plan.
- Work with the Board member liaison for the web portal vendor and maintain an active and consistent social media presence for the Association.
- Professional Development
- Lead the promotion of professional development opportunities for adult educators, ensuring that MAEA members have access to high-quality training and resources.
- Manage agreements with external organizations or individuals for professional development services.
- Monitor state and national trends in adult education and share relevant information with the membership.
- Collaborate with the Professional Development and Conference Committees to assess needs and plan activities.
- Fund Development and Advocacy
- Work with the Board to develop a fund development plan that supports the Association’s goals and operational needs.
- Seek and secure funding from a variety of sources, including private, state, and federal grants.
- Coordinate with the MAEA lobbyist on legislative or regulatory matters that could affect adult education policies and practices.
- Ensure financial transparency by maintaining an accounting system for income and expenses. Approve all payments and prepare invoices for the Treasurer and Bookkeeper, adhering to standard accounting practices.
- Assist in the preparation of the annual budget, which the Treasurer will present to the Board for approval.
- Manage any contracts with the Maine Department of Education (MDOE), in collaboration with the Treasurer and Bookkeeper.
- Other Duties
- Perform any additional duties as assigned by the Board of Directors to support the mission and operations of MAEA.
EvaluationAn annual performance evaluation of the Executive Director will be conducted by the MAEA Executive Committee to assess the effectiveness and alignment with the Association’s strategic goals.
