Alternative Education Teacher
Nature of Work:
An Alternative Education Teacher is responsible for providing specialized instructional support to students who may face challenges in traditional educational settings. This role involves developing individualized lesson plans that cater to diverse learning needs, fostering a positive and inclusive classroom environment, and implementing innovative teaching strategies. The teacher collaborates with parents, administrators, counselors, and other educators to address academic and behavioral issues, promoting social-emotional development and encouraging engagement through hands-on activities. Additionally, the teacher assesses student progress, modifies curriculum as necessary, and ensures compliance with educational standards and regulations. Strong communication, patience, and adaptability are essential attributes for success in this role.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides supervision of students in educational settings.
- Provides small group instruction to students enrolled in an alternative school setting.
- Assists in the development and implementation of an individual education service plan tailored to meet the unique needs of students.
- Fosters a supportive and inclusive classroom environment.
- Monitors student progress.
- Provides academic and emotional support to all students.
- Collaborates with families, community organizations, and mental health professionals to address students' diverse challenges and integrate life skills and social-emotional learning into the curriculum
- Conducts assessments to evaluate student progress, adjust teaching strategies accordingly, and advocate for resources and services that promote student success
- Works collaboratively with business and community partners to assist students in attaining employability skills and work experiences.
- Maintains student records and files in a confidential manner.
- Keeps accurate documentation regarding student progress, needs, strengths, etc. (i.e., course progress, grades, observations, anecdotal records, and other related data).
- Serves on various teams/committees on an as-needed basis.
- Submits all reports, forms, records, and data as requested by the Director, Principals, or Counselors.
- Maintains proper certification by attending college, workshops, and professional development courses.
- Demonstrates a high degree of professionalism and ethics, working cooperatively with the Board, the Superintendent, administrators, certificated and non-certificated personnel, community partners, parents, and students.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Director.
Minimum Training and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree, with a secondary teaching license, preferred. Four years of successful education experience is preferred.
Essential Job Functions:
Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, calculators, pencils, scissors, equipment for children, etc. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics of data, people, or
things.
Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments, and/or directions from superiors.
Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, lists, etc. Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, simple reports, forms, instructional materials, etc. using a prescribed format.
Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Requires the ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including medical, legal, and counseling terminology.
Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations. Must be adaptable at working with students in crisis. Must have a love for children.
