What are the responsibilities and job description for the Histotechnologist position at MSPCA-Angell?
This is a full-time 40 hour a week position.
THE POSITION:
The Histotechnologist (HT) works in collaboration with the veterinary staff and the Pathology team to provide Angell clientele with high quality anatomical laboratory services. These laboratory services include various technical, customer service, computer entry, clerical related procedures, specimen processing and low to high complexity laboratory testing procedures. It also includes providing procedure related information in Histology and Necropsy, specimen requirements and other related laboratory areas as requested on patient specimens and control materials.
Some of the duties include:
- Prepares surgical tissue samples for routine microscopic analysis by Pathologist: Tissue samples are processed, embedded and sectioned using good microtomy techniques to produce acceptable quality slides for staining according to procedures; Workload is prioritized and managed to meet expected Turn-Around-Times (TATs) without sacrificing quality; Demonstrates ability to complete work tasks with minimal supervision.
- Operates, maintains, troubleshoots and resolves issues with histopathology instrumentation, equipment and test assays: Recognizes instrument malfunctions and performs troubleshooting to ensure accurate operation. Clearly communicates suspected instrumentation problems to the supervisor and other necessary staff. Performs and documents routine and complex instrument maintenance, troubleshooting and minor repairs on a scheduled basis.
- Provides customer service and acts as representative for the department by answering phones and addressing email inquiries. Resolves problems or concerns of caller, provides and receives information for referral tests and in house tests, and forwards calls to appropriate individuals for resolution. Provides technical instruction and information to veterinarians, hospital staff and laboratory support staff.
- Assist in the training process for new and current employees; accurately records, discusses and troubleshoots the trainee’s progress with supervisor and other lead technicians as well as the trainee.
- Assists Pathologist with necropsies and collection of tissue samples for diagnostic investigations.
- Stains tissue for Routine and Special Stains as requested: Stains are accurately performed and Quality Control (QC) results recorded; Stain quality is evaluated for acceptability prior to release of histological sections to the ordering pathologist.

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Graduate of NAACL accredited Histotechnology program with certification as a Histotechnologist (HT) or (HTL) by ASCP, ASCP eligible or other nationally recognized credentialing agency preferred.
Experience: 1-3 yrs. experience in a Histopathology Laboratory with working knowledge of performing routine, complex and specialized tests. A minimum of 1year wet trimming experience preferred.
