Reports To: Director of Summer Programs

The MSSM STEM Summer Camp is a special opportunity for teachers to engage young students in

experiential, inquiry-based STEM learning. Connected to Maine School of Science and Mathematics, a

nationally recognized school for academically motivated students passionate about science and mathematics,

the camp is an immersion program where teachers bring STEM learning to life through interactive lessons and

hands-on applications. With an emphasis on exploration, teamwork, and discovery, MSSM summer camps

promote curiosity among campers while enabling instructors to have an opportunity to experiment with elective

courses in various STEM fields in an engaging summer setting.

MSSM offers a Discovery Week for young explorers ages 10-12 and three themed weeks - Space, Terra, and

Tech - for students ages 12-14. Instructors lead three 70 minute sessions per day, while the afternoons allow for

special field trips and activities. An energetic group of camp counselors provide a rich and active evening

program in the School's residence hall. All materials are provided and classes focus on hands-on learning in

STEM fields.

Essential Duties:

• Develop and lead engaging STEM career inspirational lessons and activities for campers.

• Facilitate hands-on experiments that encourage problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration.

• Supervise and support campers during instructional sessions and activities.

• Work with fellow staff to coordinate field trips and special events.

• Provide a safe, inclusive, and curiosity-driven learning environment.
  

Essential Skills:

To be successful in this position you must be able to professionally and pleasantly relate to students and have

experience in hands-on education and knowledge of a topic in one or more of the camp’s weekly themes. This

position requires strong detail and organization skills, excellent communication skills, and willingness to work

with children ages 10-14. Strong candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree or higher in STEM or Education and

have teaching experience, preferably with middle-school-aged students.

We seek enthusiastic educators with subject knowledge, excellent communication skills, and the capacity to

design engaging, field-based educational experiences based on the themes we have for each week. Applicants

with teaching experience, experiential education experience, or previous summer camp and mentoring

experience are particularly encouraged to apply. On-campus housing is provided with three meals a day, which

supports a collaborative and dynamic community of educators during the summer.
