Job Description

Job Title : Registered Nurse

Job Specialty : Labor and Delivery Nurse, Obstetrics RN, Postpartum

Job Duration : 13 weeks

Shift : 7 pm to 7 am, varying nights of the week

Guaranteed Hours : 36 hours per week

Experience : Minimum 2 years

License : Valid, current, full, and unrestricted RN license in the State of Alaska

Certifications : BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP

Must-Have : Alaska RN License at time of submission, flu vaccination

Job Description :

• Perform a variety of nursing care procedures independently while considering specific patient conditions and treatments.
• Support individuals of all ages and their families during antepartum, postpartum, laboring stages, newborn baby care, and care of post-surgical C-section patients.
• Respond to after-hours call services, holidays, and weekends, including emergencies such as trauma and fetal distress C-sections.
• Make sound nursing judgments in emergency environments, initially independently during scheduled shifts.
• Consult with the appropriate manager / supervisor in difficult situations.
• Ensure safe, therapeutic, and efficient care for patients with multisystem disease and complications using appropriate infection control measures.
• Administer age-specific medications and therapeutics accurately.
• Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare team members to coordinate patient care activities.
• Facilitate healing through individualized, goal-oriented nursing care based on scientific principles and the nursing process.
• Provide counseling and support to patients / significant others, utilizing other healthcare professionals for psychosocial problems if needed.
• Plan, coordinate, and complete patient care on C-section post-surgical and obstetrics units, closely monitoring patients returning from surgery.
• Provide 1 : 1 care during labor, including medical interventions, vaginal exams, comfort measures, pain relief, and labor coaching.
• Monitor, interpret, and document electronic fetal heart rate tracing using current NICHD terminology and perform scheduled NSTs.
• Stabilize and prepare high-risk maternal or neonatal patients for transfer to tertiary care facilities.
• Offer breastfeeding support and perform well-baby checks.
• Accomplish nursing assessment through interviewing, observation, and nursing processes, obtaining and interpreting age-related patient information.
• Impart educational knowledge to enhance decision-making and promote understanding among patients, families, staff, and the community.
• Participate in patient care conferences and educational programs for patients and staff.
• Communicate positively and constructively with staff, patients, and other healthcare team members.
• Guide others in nursing interventions and follow corporate, hospital, and departmental policies and procedures.
• Develop and contribute to nursing care plans based on patient problems and responses, coordinating with the healthcare team.
• Document reassessments and write progress notes accurately.
• Attend staff meetings and participate in goal setting, maintaining certifications and complying with dress code.
• Float to Medical Surgical Floor ED as needed during low census on unit.
