Job Title : Surgical Technologist

Shift : Tuesday - Friday, 10 hours per day, includes on-call
Guaranteed Hours : 40 hours per week

License : Completion of a technologist training program accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the Department of Education
Certifications : Surgical Technologist Certification (CST) preferred; Current BLS certification
Must-Have : Must have or obtain FLU vaccination; Certifications must be provided at the time of employment
Job Description :
- Scrubs in on surgical procedures under professional nurse supervision for various advanced and complex surgeries including General Rectal Surgery, Laparoscope and Open Cholecystectomies, appendectomies, hernias, thyroidectomy, Obstetric / Gynecology, Otolaryngology, Orthopedic procedures, Endoscopic procedures, and other required surgeries.
- Provides patient care and supports individuals of all ages and their families, performing duties as assigned and ensuring quality patient care in both routine and emergent situations.
- Utilizes the AORN Standards of Care in everyday practice.
- Supplies one or two surgeons with proper instruments, sutures, sponges, and equipment.
- Ensures the accuracy of the sponges, needles, and instrument counts in collaboration with a professional nurse.
- Scrubs, gowns, and gloves for surgical procedures and assists in gowning and gloving surgeons and assistants.
- Corrects breaks in aseptic techniques to provide optimal patient care.
- Anticipates surgeon's preferences for certain materials or instruments and responds in advance.
- Updates nurses as necessary based on continuing assessment of equipment needs and physician preferences, demonstrating sound clinical judgment.
- Sets up a sterile table with instruments, equipment, supplies, medications, and solutions needed for surgical procedures, ensuring equipment is in good working order.
- Maintains the highest standards of sterile technique during procedures and assists in draping the sterile field.
- Correctly labels and processes all operative fluids.
- Prepares the room for the next patient and operates and monitors specialized OR equipment.
- Demonstrates use of autoclaves and reports equipment needing repairs and low supply levels.
- Takes apart and reassembles instruments for cleaning and prepares them for sterilization, ensuring supply and instrument sterility.
- Manages care by guiding others, following policies and procedures, communicating constructively, and participating in hospital committee activities.
- Involves teaching and development, assessing learner needs, initiating plans, developing educational programs, orienting new staff, and participating in continuing education.
- Contributes to the area, department, and hospital through participation in staff meetings, cost-effective practices, and committee work.
