Job Summary

Provides a broad range of services to students enrolled in Adult Basic Skills courses to support recruitment, intake and orientation, ongoing student support services, and student transition to college-level coursework and success in achieving college certificates and degrees and solidifying employment. Advises students concerning educational requirements, academic schedules, financial aid policies and procedures, career and vocational goals and assists students in removing barriers to succeed in college Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. Tracks student progress in order to provide on-going support and maintain data for grant reporting. Works collaboratively with the Adult Basic Skills and CTE faculty.

Essential Duties

  1. Advises and assists primarily ESOL students in the development of meaningful education plans that are aligned to career and life goals, including the short and long-term education and career pathway, wage and occupational information, selection of appropriate courses, the interpretation of institutional requirements, and the assessment of progress toward established career and life goals. Assists students with the development of decision-making skills, awareness of educational resources and reinforcement of self-direction in educational planning.  
  2. Works collaboratively with the ABS program faculty and staff, and other college student support services to develop strategies for keeping at-risk students in class and to transition those who are ready to work or to CTE, short term certificate programs or Career Pathway programs. Works collaboratively with other departments to facilitate and address student and program needs.
  3. Assists students with admissions, enrollment, financial aid, and academic status. Coordinates funding with other forms of financial assistance, resulting in an individualized funding plan that remains fiscally viable for the duration of each individual’s participation in the program. 
  4. Develops and coordinates retention and transition workshops for ABS students including CTE program presentations and Student Success Seminars tailored to Adult Basic Skills student needs. Plans, designs, and presents job search workshops or refer students to WorkSource Oregon as needed.
  5. Develops, implements, and maintains retention and transition strategies. Creates brochures, transition materials, forms and documents for distribution and/or presentation. Conducts outreach and recruitment for marginalized populations through community.
  6. Provides support for students experiencing family, personal, or economic crises, which may impact school performance. Helps students to access needed counseling services, support networks, community health, or housing services.
  1. Assists department in accurately tracking and maintaining student data for grant reporting in statewide web-based data system. 
  2. Serves as advisor to student cohorts, including working with faculty and staff to set up cohort implementation.
  3. Performs all other related duties as assigned. 

Additional Duties

  1.  Participates in department leadership meetings and some college committees as appropriate. Participates in professional development opportunities as appropriate.
  2. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience, Computer Skills, etc.)

  • A Bachelor's degree in education, social work, counseling, one of the social sciences, or related field
  • Three (3) years of experience working in an advising, workforce development, instructional role, or social work, assessing student needs and coordinating educational and community based services.
  • Experience working with at-risk populations and culturally diverse populations
  • Intermediate (considerable) computer skills with word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, and email applications, preferably within the Microsoft Office Suite

At the college’s discretion, additional education/experience may be substituted for experience/education on a year-for-year basis.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in education, social work, counseling, one of the social sciences, or related field
  • Experience using standardized adult assessment systems, such as the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System, and web-based data systems
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and another language that meets community needs
  • Knowledge of student services functions at community college setting such as financial aid, advising, and counseling

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, other agencies, and the general public
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to prioritize and meet deadlines while providing calm, courteous, accurate and professional service in fast-paced environment with multiple interruptions
  • Ability to effectively handle multiple tasks, coordinate numerous schedules, and meet changing deadlines
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Problem solving skills 

Working Conditions

Work Environment: Work is performed primarily in a college learning center, classroom, lab, cubicle, or similar environment, and remotely/online from home as required by the college. Must be able to work from all MHCC campuses and locations.

Hazards: Potential interaction with anxious and/or distressed individuals.

Physical Demands: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a college learning center, classroom, lab or similar setting; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other general office and instructional equipment and technologies; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; kneeling, bending at the waist, reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to retrieve and store files and supplies; lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying office and instructional technologies and equipment, supplies and materials weighing up to 10 pounds; hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone; seeing to read, prepare and assure the accuracy of documents.

SALARY

Salary placement will be based on applicable education and/or years of relevant equivalent experience at the sole discretion of the College, per the guidelines in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement. Please include all relevant education and full and part-time experience in your application that you want the College to review towards potential placement.  Hired employees will not have an opportunity to update past education and/or experience or appeal initial placement after the time of hire.

Part-time Tutors are paid based on accumulated work hours according to the salary schedule below; all new employees will start at level 1.
