Reports To: Head of Middle School


Job Description: The Middle School Directed Studies (Special Education) Teacher has the responsibility of enthusiastically, effectively, and responsively instructing neurodiverse students in a manner that leads to student achievement of grade-level objectives. Along with direct effective and responsive instruction based on neurodiverse pedagogical research, this teacher will collaborate with other faculty members to champion and best support neurodiverse learners within the MPCS community. In addition, the Middle School Directed Studies Teacher will collaborate with the guidance counselor on the best implementation of accommodations based on psychoeducational evaluations and knowing each student on an individual basis. Candidates must be able to create a Christ-centered, safe, and appropriately challenging learning environment for students both in and out of the classroom.

Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree is required, preferably with a focus on special education. An advanced degree and previous teaching expertise for neurodiverse students are not mandatory but preferred. The ability and desire to coach and/or lead athletic teams and/or cocurricular activities are preferred.

Physical Requirements: Candidates must be able to fulfill the following physical requirements: lifting and transporting boxes not exceeding 20 pounds; the ability to stand for long periods of time while instructing; having excellent hearing abilities; having the physical ability to transport students from one area of a building/campus to another.

The Middle School Directed Studies Teacher is responsible for the following:

· Ministering to students compassionately and sincerely so they may continue to grow in their faith.

· Accepting the work at Mount Paran Christian School as a personal calling and identify themselves as ministers of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

· Teaching subjects at an appropriate instructional level

· Championing the importance of serving neurodiverse learners within the MPCS community

· Possessing a deep understanding of the research and practice informing the field of neurodiverse learning

· Providing content development that is both teacher-focused and student-focused

· Promoting student engagement in order to assess and encourage progress

· Supporting and strengthening the learning capabilities of each student

· Possessing the expertise to interpret and apply the data and recommendations contained in psychoeducational evaluations 

· Possessing the skill to support regular education faculty in teaching neurodiverse learners

· Positive management of the learning environment

· Maintaining a healthy learning environment for the students in both the classroom as well as instruction

· Monitoring and management of students’ behavior, including appropriate enforcement of student behavior rules

· Following professional practices consistent with school policies in working with students, students’ records, parents and colleagues

· Fostering and participating in a collaborative environment

· Maintaining a professional demeanor in dealings with parents and students

· Scheduling conferences according to school policies

· Conducting assigned classes at scheduled times

· Providing adequate information, plans and materials for substitute teachers

· Maintaining accurate, complete and appropriate records and files

· Attending and participating in faculty meetings and other assigned meetings and activities according to school policy

· Demonstrating accurate, up-to-date knowledge of content

· Implementing designated curriculum

· Maintaining lesson plans as required by school policy

· Assigning reasonable tasks and homework for students

· Assuming responsibility for supervision of students in out-of-class settings, such as field trips or recess 

· Showing support and high esteem for MPCS at all times

· Complying with conditions as stated in employee contract and handbook

· Modeling appropriate Christian behavior in speech and actions

· Any other duties as assigned
