Mount Pleasant School District Job Description Speech, Language, and Hearing Specialist Job Purpose Statements: The job of “Speech, Language, and Hearing Specialist ” provides appropriate individualized assessment and clinical services to identified speech, language, and hearing impaired pupils as determined by the student’s Individual Educational Plan. Essential Job Functions: Screens all children in kindergarten, first, and second grades and special education classes. Identifies verbal communication problems through referrals from school personnel. Performs individual evaluation for all children identified. This evaluation may include: a. Use of appropriate instruments and equipment. b. Consultation with school personnel, parents, physician, psychologists, and other professionals. Takes initiative in seeking additional help through outside disciplines when this is indicated for the benefit of the child. Serves as a member of Eligibility and Planning Team as required. Participates in the assessment, planning, and identification process for appropriate pupils. Develops remedial strategies appropriate to the individual needs of children. Provides therapy, individually and/or in small groups, for those children with identified communicative disorders. Presents and utilizes a variety of materials motivating to children and appropriate to their needs. Confers with and provides relevant information regarding the therapy program and the needs of the child. Works effectively with principals, teachers and other specialist in problem solving and assessments. Confers frequently with parents and professional staff members on each pupil’s progress. Evaluates and monitors pupil progress and makes periodic reports on the achievement and personal adjustment of Speech, Language, and Hearing Handicapped pupils, in cooperation with the administration support and teaching staff, through the provision of appropriate pupil assessments. Maintains accurate attendance and other required records. Attends appropriate Pupil Personnel Services meetings. Compiles with district policies. Implements Federal, State and local regulations relative to handicapped pupils. Observes code of ethics (NEA, Title V). Other Job Functions: Operates flexibly within school environment. Provides in-service training when required. Communicates goals and progress of the therapy program. Participates in parent and school informational meetings when relevant to the speech, language, and hearing program. Recommends to appropriate staff committee or administrator various books, instructional aids, supplies, and equipment which should be ordered for special education pupils. Keeps abreast of curriculum requirements for grades and subjects in all areas studied by pupils assigned. Seeks and uses new teaching techniques and special equipment adapted to the nature of disability of students. Attends and participates in appropriate parent-faculty or community activities. Maintains professional competence through participation in in- service education activities provided and supported by the district and in other professional growth activities selected by the employee. Maintains current knowledge of regulations and procedures related to programs and services for handicapped students. Other duties as assigned. Job Requirements - Qualifications: Experience Required: Prior job related experience. Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required: Skills to motivate students, communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, direct support personnel, evaluate performance, address student needs. Knowledge of appropriate special education category (learning, severely, communication, visually and/or physically handicapped), age appropriate teaching methods, state curriculum framework, education code and relevant laws. Abilities to stand and walk for prolonged periods, perform a variety of specialized and responsible tasks, maintain records, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents and other school personnel, meet scheduling deadlines. Significant physical abilities include lifting/carrying, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity/depth perception/accommodation/field of vision. Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required: Teaching Credential for appropriate level of instruction; Clinical or Rehabilitative Service Credential LSH and Bachelor’s Degree. Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance. Organizational Relationship: The Speech, Language, and Hearing Specialist is directly responsible to the Coordinator of Pupil Personnel Services.
