JOB SUMMARY

Assists prospective/enrolled students in the development of meaningful educational and career goals by providing developmental educational planning, career assessment, advising in education/career and labor market information. This person will be responsible for maintaining liaisons with community, business leaders, and college and universities. This position will be managing programs and services to support prospective and enrolled students, and, coaching students through Adult and Higher Education.  This person will be required to meet with students; developing and monitoring program data and reports.  This person is responsible for helping to develop programs that support student entry, transition, retention and graduation for current and prospective students.  Communicating clearly and effectively with Scholarship Team, Muckleshoot Tribal College Team, and, Executive Director of Adult & Higher Education.  Completing directives as assigned by Scholarship & Higher Education Team members. This candidate will be required to supervise staff, as needed.

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ADVISING

  • Develops, coordinates, facilitates, and/or presents academic planning and career development modules and special workshops (e.g. choosing a major, resume development, identifying internship opportunities, etc.).
  • Reviews academic records as required for students with academic difficulties, transfer students, and degree candidates; monitors academic progress of students; analyzes progress reports from instructors; determines eligibility and satisfactory progress toward degree.
  • Advises students in making career related decisions, using assessment instruments where appropriate; assists students in the use of existing resources for learning about careers of interest to them; critiques resumes, and assists with programs and services related to placement activities.
  • Serves as liaison and facilitates meetings between college representatives, parents, and students.
  • PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT

  • Advise students in specific curriculum decisions including the choice and scheduling of courses, selection or change of majors and minors, etc., providing referrals to specific departments, schools, or colleges as appropriate. Career Advisor may facilitate college site visits and connect students with key staff at colleges and/or universities.
  • Provides information on specific programs, and makes referrals where appropriate, to services offered by colleges/universities or by organizations for the educational and/or career enhancement of the individual.
  • COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION

  • Organizes and presents outreach programs related to academic advising and career development within the Tribal community and schools, to include information, such as test dates, local college events, financial aid, and scholarship opportunities.
  • Prepares, organizes, and maintains appropriate resources, reports and statistical summaries.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops, and committees for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions and maintaining professional knowledge. Seek student feedback through participation in individual and departmental evaluation processes.  Direct and supervise the work of others as needed.
  • TEAMWORK

  • Participates in annual preliminary budget proposal and preparation and in long-range comprehensive planning projects.
  • Coach, mentor, and train staff as necessary. Approach conflict-resolution in an open, fair and professional manner.
  • DEPARTMENTAL FUNCTIONS

  • Collaborates with community leaders, students, parents, teachers, and administrators to identify, define, and meet student career planning and placement needs, goals, and objectives.
  • Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities, and may include driving.
  • EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION

    Required:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in college student personnel, educational administration, or a related discipline from an accredited college or university.
    • One (1) year of academic advising experience minimum.

    Preferred:

    • Experience working within a Tribal community.

    • Professional experience in educational/career planning; providing service to college students in the college environment.
    • Excellent customer service skills.
    • Clear understanding and appreciation of the training and educational opportunities offered by community colleges.
    • Keen attention to detail and accuracy.

    Knowledge of

    • Current educational practices in educational advising.
    • Assessments commonly used for academic skill determination and career interest.
    • Academic programs and admissions processes for acceptance to higher education institutions.
    • Marketing techniques and principles.

    • Methods of teaching and instruction for youth.
    • Human behavior and performance.
    • Learning and motivation.
    • Native American culture and history.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    The employee is frequently required to sit, talk, or hear. The employee is required to stand, walk, balance, bend at the waist, crouch, kneel, twist, use foot controls, and operate a motor vehicle.  The employee must lift, carry and/or push/pull up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

    Licenses or Certifications Required

    A current and valid Washington State Driver’s License.
