JOB SUMMARY

  The Optometrist is the primary provider of vision care.  Examines and diagnoses vision difficulties or diseases of the eye.  Tests and prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses, and other medical treatments.   

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To be in attendance and on time.
  • Intake patient case history.
  • Conduct Biomicroscopic exam.
  • Conducts fundus exam.
  • Conduct auto refractions.
  • Conducts detail consultations patient education.
  • Take retinal images through retinal camera.
  • Conduct visual fields exam through a visual fields machine.
  • Examine patient’s eyes to diagnose vision problems, such as nearsightedness and farsightedness.
  • Test patients for depth and color perception and ability to focus and coordinate the eyes.
  • Prescribe glasses and/or contact lenses.
  • Provide vision therapy or low vision rehabilitation.
  • Test for glaucoma and other eye diseases.
  • Diagnose conditions caused by systemic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
  • Refers patients to other healthcare practitioners as needed.
  • Prescribe medications to treat vision problems or eye diseases.
  • Provide preoperative and postoperative care to cataract patients as well as to patients who have had corrective laser surgery.
  • Promote nutrition and hygiene education to patients to minimize the risk of eye disease.
  • Utilize the current Optical department electronic health records for patient documentation.
  • Adheres to safety policies and procedures within the MHWC.
  • Participates in filing incident reports when appropriate and file them to the Clinic Manager.
  • Responds to emergencies in a calm and professional manner.
  • Represents the Muckleshoot Health and Wellness Center in a positive and professional manner when interacting with patients and the community.
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations skills in dealing with staff, providers and management.
  • Demonstrate excellent and consistent verbal, written and use of electronic communication skills.
  • Perform routine or as necessary meetings with management to review current departmental status.
  • Consistently maintains confidentiality in regards to patient information and operations.
  • Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time.  Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.
  • EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION

    Required:

    • Must have a Doctor of Optometry degree from an accredited optometry school. With successful completion of a one year postgraduate clinical residency program.
    • Must pass a written National Board examination and state clinical examination.
    • Washington state Doctor of Optometry license in good standing with no actions taken.
    • Five (5) years’ experience in a physician or group practice in optometry.

    Preferred:

    • Member of the American Ophthalmic Association.
    • Vitreal- Retinal Residency.

     

    SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION

    Knowledge of:  

    Ophthalmic Dispensing, Contact Lens Theory, Ophthalmic Laboratory, Contact Lens Fitting, Optical Office and Business Management.

    Skilled in:

    Customer Service -Enjoys dealing with the public, cheerfulness, tact, good communications skills and the ability to inspire customer/patient confidence. Detail oriented. Prompt and dependable  

    Ability to:

    Properly document patient charting with electronic health records system.

     

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    The working conditions described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this class. 

     

    The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, talk, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, crouch, bend at the waist, reach with hands and arms, and use hands to grasp, finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.

    Licenses or Certifications Required

    Washington State Doctor of Optometry License in good standing with no actions taken.
