JOB SUMMARY

 The Publications Coordinator at the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe assists in the production and distribution of various publications, including the monthly community newspaper. This role involves coordinating content submissions, editing articles, and ensuring adherence to established design and style standards. The coordinator collaborates with Tribal departments and community members to gather newsworthy content and photographs. Additionally, the position requires managing production schedules, overseeing pre-press and printing processes, and maintaining distribution lists. The Publications Coordinator also supports the development of the Tribe’s annual report and other special publications. This role reports directly to the Tribal Publications Admin.

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in coordinating content submissions for the monthly Tribal newspaper, ensuring timely receipt from contributors.
  • Edit and proofread articles for clarity, consistency, and adherence to established style guidelines.
  • Collaborate with the Tribal Publications Admin to develop and maintain production schedules, ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Support the design and layout process of publications, ensuring visual appeal and readability.
  • Liaise with Tribal departments and community members to gather newsworthy content and photographs.
  • Assist in managing relationships with third-party vendors involved in printing and distribution.
  • Maintain distribution lists and coordinate the dissemination of publications to the community.
  • Support the development and production of the Tribe’s annual report and other special publications.
  • Ensure all content complies with Tribal policies and legal standards through coordination with the Tribal Publications Admin.
  • Attend community events to assist in content gathering and photography as needed.
  • Perform administrative tasks such as maintaining records, files, and archives related to publications.
  • Assist in training and coordinating activities of auxiliary photographers and writers from within the Tribal community.
  • Stay updated on industry best practices in publishing and recommend improvements to processes.
  • Handle inquiries related to publications from community members and other stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Tribal Publications Admin to support the Publications department.
  • Because of the Tribe's commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.
  • EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION

    Required:

    • Associate’s degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or a closely related field.
    • At least two years of experience in writing, editing, or publishing, preferably within a governmental or Tribal setting.

    SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION

    Skills:

    • Proficiency in editing and proofreading publications.
    • Competence in desktop publishing and design software.
    • Strong organizational and time management capabilities.
    • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
    • Ability to collaborate with diverse community members.
    • Attention to detail in all aspects of publication.

    • Understanding of publication production processes.
    • Familiarity with Tribal governance and community dynamics.
    • Knowledge of copyright laws and ethical publishing standards.
    • Awareness of current trends in journalism and publishing.
    • Proficiency in using digital photography equipment.
    • Basic knowledge of budgeting principles related to publishing.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    The Publications Coordinator role is primarily office-based, requiring prolonged periods of sitting and extensive use of computer equipment for tasks such as editing, design, and communication. The position demands clear verbal communication and active listening skills for effective collaboration with team members and community contributors. Occasional lifting and carrying of materials weighing up to 25 pounds may be necessary when handling publications or equipment. The role also involves attending community events, which may require standing, walking, and operating photography equipment. The ability to adjust focus and maintain visual acuity is essential for tasks involving detailed design work and proofreading. Overall, the position requires a balance of sedentary work and moderate physical activity, with an emphasis on visual and auditory capabilities.
