WORK SCHEDULE: 8 hrs/day when school is in session. 191 days, calendar available upon request.

 

PURPOSE: The Dean of Students works to create positive behavior settings with students and staff from grades K through 5, including those who have known or suspected disabilities and those without disabilities. The position is responsible for providing individual and small-group skill-building. The Dean must be able to collect and chart behavioral data and provide liaison services to teachers and therapists based on data. The Dean possesses the knowledge and skills to perform essential functions and key responsibilities in an exemplary manner. The Dean has the experience and ability to train others in each of these areas, across settings and student populations, and helps build capacity in the school.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other related duties may be assigned. 

  • Demonstrates proficiency in planning, organizing, and coordinating assigned tasks. 
  • Develops, adapts, and implements trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming, culturally congruent supports 
  • Supports Positive Behavior Supports (PBIS) and Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) in the school setting 
  • Possesses knowledge and demonstrates competency in utilization of the de-escalation continuum.  (Escalation, de-escalation, establishing rapport, problem solving to teach alternative behavior, re-integration of students into educational settings, transitions to LRE, appropriate options, data collection/analysis/reporting).
  • Assists in developing programs and/or activities to promote positive student behavior, as well as intervention strategies, to include a working knowledge of the Collaborative Problem Solving Model. 
  • Responsible for all CPS and behavior data; includes data collection, synthesis, analysis, and reporting.
  • Works closely with the Counselor and CARE team to implement and support positive Behavior Support Plan for all students.
  • Participates as a member of the FBA/BSP team, along with parents and building administrator or building-level designee (e.g school counselor), and any additional members (teacher, counselor, community partner, support staff). 
  • Works closely with the Student Support Team and teachers to provide interventions which meet students’ needs. 
  • Works with referred students, SST, and their teacher for the purpose of modifying inappropriate behavior. 
  • Consults with, and assists therapists, school staff and parents in developing student interventions. 
  • Generates written correspondence and reports that are well organized and grammatically correct.
  • Trains, coaches, and manages the schedule for all behavior support aides. 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Perform duties in a courteous and efficient manner that builds the confidence of staff, students, and the public in Muddy Creek Charter School, and enhances learning. 
  • Observe laws, district policies and procedures, and professional standards for the position. 
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with school personnel, parents, students and the public; work collaboratively as a team member. 
  • Carry out work responsibilities with strong organizational skills effectively under pressure of deadlines, difficult situations, interruptions, and new or emergency conditions. 
  • Supervises students outside the classroom, as assigned, to support the MCCS's behavior and instructional programs.

SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR KNOWLEDGE:

EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited University. Current Oregon Teaching or Admin License strongly preferred. Significant experience working in a behavior milieu also accepted. PBIS and CPS training preferred.

 

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Focuses on resolving conflict; Ability to remain professional and not personalize threatening behavior by students (verbal and physical); listens to others without interrupting; keeps emotions under control; remains open to others’ ideas and contributes to building a positive team spirit.  

 

Able to perform duties in a courteous and efficient manner that builds the confidence of staff, students, and the public in Muddy Creek Charter School, and enhances learning. Ability to interact effectively and collaboratively with individuals and groups of all ages using conflict resolution skills in response to crisis situations. Maintain confidentiality and the privacy of students, staff, and parents. 

 

COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Ability to communicate with credibility and confidence, both orally and in writing, consistent with the level of responsibility for this position. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with school personnel, parents, students and the public; work collaboratively as a team member.

 

TECHNOLOGY SKILLS: Proficient use of technology which includes: basic operations and concepts, word processing, spreadsheets, internet usage, email, integration of technology.  Ability to collect, record, store, retrieve, assimilate, organize, and utilize information and records efficiently in support of school behavior management and attendance programs. 

 

OTHER:  

  • Able to obtain Standard First Aid certification, or the ability to obtain certification within two months of hire, may be required. 
  • Maintain regular attendance at work and work activities and is punctual in meeting deadlines, attending meetings, and following schedule. 
  • Develop job skills necessary to meet changes in the position. Maintain personal appearance and hygiene appropriate to the position. 
  • Meet applicable school physical ability/health and safety guidelines for the position.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen. The employee is regularly required to stand and use hands or fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is required to regularly walk (occasionally on an uneven surface), occasionally sit and reach with hands and arms (frequently reaching above the shoulder), stoop, kneel, or crouch. With school approved training the employee may be required to restrain a student and/or provide physical assistance for extended periods of time. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. 

 

The employee may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens. Supervision responsibilities require the employee to be able to stand up to 30 consecutive minutes and move rapidly to intervene in situations where a student's safety is being jeopardized.
