QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must hold a valid Virginia Department of Education Teaching License or be eligible for one. A Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction is preferred. The candidate should have experience in research-based instructional practices, including implicit and explicit teaching, project-based learning, and 21st-century performance-based objectives such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. Additionally, experience providing professional development, coaching teachers, and working in small-group facilitation is highly desirable. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, along with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, are essential.
DESCRIPTION
The Innovation Coach plays a key role in enhancing teacher practice and student achievement by supporting the implementation of effective instructional strategies. This position involves modeling best practices, assisting teachers in selecting and applying research-based instructional methods, and providing professional development to strengthen instructional effectiveness. The Innovation Coach works closely with teachers, administrators, and division instructional supervisors to ensure instruction is aligned with the district’s goals and state standards. The role also includes analyzing student data to inform instruction and intervention planning while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation in teaching.
GENERAL DUTIES (May not include all duties performed)
- Serve as a liaison between teachers, school administrators, and division instructional supervisors.
- Provide coaching and instructional support to teachers in implementing best practices.
- Analyze student assessment data to support data-driven instructional decision-making; may serve on the school’s leadership team to support the advancement of student achievement.
- Assist in developing and implementing intervention, remediation, and enrichment strategies for students.
- Model effective and engaging teaching practices in a variety of classroom settings, including strategies that promote deeper learning.
- Observe classrooms, provide feedback, and offer instructional support tailored to individual teacher needs.
- Support the development of lessons that incorporate critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and deeper learning.
- Plan and facilitate professional development sessions aligned with instructional goals, including the modeling of effective and engaging instructional strategies.
- Stay informed on best practices, current instructional trends, and Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) requirements.
- Maintain documentation of coaching activities and provide regular reports to school leadership.
- Participate in school and division meetings, trainings, and other professional development opportunities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the principal or division supervisors.
SUPERVISION
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Deputy Superintendent in consultation with the School Principal.
WORK CONDITIONS
This position operates in a school setting, requiring flexibility to work across multiple grade levels and classrooms. The Innovation Coach must be able to travel between schools as needed. The role involves frequent collaboration with teachers, administrators, and instructional teams, as well as the ability to deliver training sessions and presentations. Work may occasionally extend beyond regular school hours for professional development sessions, meetings, or special events.
