Job Title: Gifted Education Teacher &
Coordinator of the Division’s FIRST Lego League Program
Reports to: Principal & Gifted Coordinator
Assigned Campus: In proximity of the Gifted Coordinator
GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:
Work is performed under the general supervision of the building principal, or designee. This is an exempt position as defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act. Employees holding exempt positions often are required to follow a flexible work schedule, which may include working extended hours to meet specific job responsibilities. The contracted salary covers all hours worked.
This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
Primary Purpose:
Coordinate the division program for gifted students. Collaborate with district staff and outside personnel to provide meaningful educational opportunities for gifted students.
Coordinate the division wide FIRST Lego League program. Collaborate with district staff and FIRST Lego League resources to provide STEM educational opportunities for all eligible students.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s degree
Valid Virginia teaching certificate
Gifted and Talented certification
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to organize and coordinate district wide program
Ability to test and interpret data
Knowledge of gifted curriculum and instruction
Knowledge of strategies and materials for the education of gifted students
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Proven leadership skills and experience in managing educational programs
Experience:
Five years experience as a classroom teacher
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Program Management
- Implement procedures and coordinate the process to identify gifted students at all grade levels district wide, including review of student data and testing of students.
- Ongoing development and revision of gifted curriculum.
- Assist teachers to develop and provide gifted students with alternative course work through curriculum modification, acceleration, differentiation, etc.
- Develop and conduct staff development, including sessions on delivery of instruction, enriched learning in classroom settings, and methods for identifying gifted students.
- Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the gifted program, and implement changes based on the findings.
- Design and implement meaningful weekly enrichment curriculum for elementary students throughout the 7 elementary schools, grades 3-5.
- Ongoing development and revisions of the Local Gifted Plan, ensuring alignment of gifted programming with state and district standards.
- Coordinate and execute meaningful field trip experiences by grade level for gifted students grades 3-12.
Consultation
- Provide resources and materials to support staff in accomplishing program goals.
- Consult with parents, administrators, counselors, teachers, community agencies, and other relevant individuals regarding students identified as gifted.
- Plan and conduct parent meetings, including parent advisory committee meetings.
Budget and Inventory
- Create the annual gifted education budget to ensure that programs are cost effective and that gifted funds are managed wisely.
- Compile and present budget and cost estimates to central office administrators based on documented program needs.
- Participate in grant-writing activities to obtain program funding.
- Assist with the selection and purchase of supplemental equipment and supplies for the program.
Policy, Reports, and Law
- Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
- Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education regulations, and the local board policy.
- Work with data processing staff to assure accurate reporting of gifted students and to assure an adequate monitoring of gifted students.
Supervisory Responsibility:
- Maintain School Board and school-wide safety rules when supervising students gifted students on campus and on field trips.
Other duties:
Coordinate and conduct administrative duties for the division’s FIRST Robotics Program divisionwide, including creating purchase orders, contact administrators from central office and the schools, organizing the annual Scrimmage, arranging regional and state competitions, training new coaches, and anything FIRST Lego Education related.
Attend and participate in monthly Region 7 Gifted meetings and other statewide gifted associations, which includes participation in the Regional Speaking for the Gifted Conference in June.
