Multnomah County Library is excited to announce we are hiring two (2) Library Location Supervisors! The hiring list created from this recruitment may be used to fill future full time, part-time, temporary or limited duration positions should they become available.
As a Library Location Supervisor, you will work closely with a Location Administrator to ensure smooth building operations by guiding both access services and security staff in daily operations. You will direct and supervise materials movement and scheduling activities to ensure efficient and effective location services, as well as coordinate facilities work. You will mentor and encourage the professional development of your staff, as well as complete performance reviews, provide coaching, and address performance issues as they arise.
You will also provide reference and readers’ advisory services to our patrons as well as offer assistance with technology and circulation issues. This will assist you in building and maintaining professional relationships with library users and creating positive experiences as a result. You will respond to patron comments and complaints in-person and via virtual channels. In addition, you will communicate with staff and the public about library decisions, goals, services, programs, pillars and priorities.
The library is open and welcoming to all members of our community, including individuals who may be encountering hardships or challenges that affect their behavior and interactions. A large part of your job will involve working as a primary responder for safety and security issues; therefore, your ability to exercise quick and mature judgment in dealing with potentially disruptive, physically dangerous or abusive customers and emergencies is crucial. You will be responsible for interpreting and explaining library policies and procedures, resolving patron complaints, and recommending corrective action as necessary. You will also provide reference and readers’ advisory services to our patrons as well as offer assistance with technology and circulation issues.
This position requires someone with the ability to work respectfully and capably with people from all backgrounds and age groups. You must demonstrate a positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, and cultural sensitivity while working with customers, co-workers and community. You will also perform a variety of administrative and technical tasks related to library services.
You will serve as a member of the library's management team, both as a member of the larger group and as a representative on other cross-functional, systemwide teams. You will work with location staff and the Location Administrator to help support library goals and objectives. You will evaluate operations and activities within your assigned responsibilities and recommend improvements and modifications as needed. Finally, you will participate in continuing education for professional development to enhance and improve your leadership skills.

To Qualify

Minimum Qualifications/Transferable Skills:
- Bachelor's degree or the equivalent of four years of experience in library operations.
- At least three years of customer service experience.
- At least one year of lead or supervisory experience which includes Person-in-Charge experience.
- Ability to pass a criminal records check, should a job offer be extended. Results of the records check will be reviewed on an individualized basis. A conviction is not an automatic bar to employment.
Preferred Qualifications/Transferable Skills: You do not need to have the following preferred qualifications/transferable skills to qualify. However, keep in mind we may consider some or all of the following when identifying the most qualified candidates. Please clearly explain on your application how you meet any of the following preferred qualifications/transferable skills.
- Previous experience in a library setting.
- One year of responsible readers' advisory and reference experience.
- Experience coordinating facilities and building operations.
- Experience working in a unionized environment.
- Master's degree in library science from a program accredited by the American Library Association.
