At Multnomah County Health Department, we are committed to providing high-quality healthcare services to our community. We are currently seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Medical Laboratory Technician to play a crucial role in our diagnostic process.
As a key member of our team, you will:
- Be at the Forefront of Diagnostics: You will be responsible for the accurate and efficient procurement of various patient specimens.
- Ensure Timely Results: You will process and analyze patient specimens, providing timely and reliable laboratory results that are essential for accurate diagnoses.
- Support Patient Care: Your meticulous work will directly aid medical professionals in the diagnosis and treatment of their patients, making a tangible difference in their health journeys.
- Maintain High Standards: You will adhere to strict laboratory protocols and quality control measures to ensure the accuracy and integrity of all test results.
- Collaborate with a Dedicated Team: You will work alongside a team of skilled healthcare professionals who are committed to providing exceptional patient care.
Other duties will include:
- Collecting patient specimens (phlebotomy) across all age groups and patient conditions, adhering to proper collection techniques.
- Educate patients on specimen collection and ensure adherence to guidelines, including identifying and rejecting unacceptable samples.
- Perform a broad range of laboratory tests (hematology, bacteriology, chemistry, parasitology, urinalysis, coagulation, microscopy).
- Analyze and interpret test results to contribute to accurate medical diagnoses.
- Develop, implement, and maintain Quality Assurance programs, including quality control testing and troubleshooting equipment/reagent issues.
- Monitor and track testing processes to ensure timely and accurate reporting of results, resolving any errors in availability or format.
- Evaluate new lab technology and equipment, and develop/maintain standard operating procedures to ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and guidelines.
- Serve as a technical resource for clinical services, providing expertise on testing, specimen handling, equipment use/maintenance/sterilization, and electronic systems.
- Coordinate and direct daily laboratory operations within the clinic, providing technical supervision and guidance to assigned staff.
- Manage staff competency, including orientation, training, ongoing monitoring, and performance evaluations for phlebotomy and laboratory testing personnel.

Minimum Qualifications/Transferable Skills*:
Education/Training: Equivalent to an Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Laboratory Technology or related field demonstrating the capacity for the required knowledge and skills; AND
Experience: One year of laboratory experience.
Required Certifications:
- Certified Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) through American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP)
- Valid CPR / BLS certification upon hire OR within 30 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications/ Transferable Skills*: You do not need to have the following preferred qualifications/ transferable skills to qualify. However, keep in mind we may consider some or all of the following when identifying the most qualified candidates. - Previous phlebotomy experience.
- Transferable skills: Your transferable skills are any skills you have gained through education, work experience (including the military) or life experience that are relevant for this position.
