This position provides community health education services to Black/African American/Black Immigrant and Refugee communities in Multnomah County. The position will leverage the ongoing work of the Healthy Birth Initiative (HBI) and requires the incumbent in this position to meet the African American Culture KSA qualifications and be both a certified lactation consultant and Lamaze Childbirth Educator.

As The Health Educator, You Will

  • Assess community and individual needs; develop, plans, and conduct health education strategies and programs.
  • Design health education materials, facilitate events, and promote initiatives through various channels.
  • Coordinate grant applications and foster strategic partnerships to support health education programs.
  • Coordinate and communicate with HBI staff, participants, health and social service providers, and community members to assess and coordinate culturally relevant health education services.
  • Build relationships with African American specific and other organizations to eliminate health inequities, and meet with HBI team members to assess client needs and develop health education strategies.
  • Work with African American communities, provide outreach to father-based organizations, and collaborate with agencies to organize health and wellness fairs and events.
  • Develop, plan, and conduct health education strategies, interventions, and programs in partnership with staff and community.
  • Design and distribute health education materials.
  • Facilitate health education events like workshops and conferences.
  • Document activities, maintain databases, and provide regular updates on program activities and participation.
  • Assess what works and what doesn't work to advance health equity.
  • Share findings to build capacity and increase awareness and report to leadership on findings and plans.

Minimum Qualifications/Transferable Skills*:

  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree
  • one (1) to four (4) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position
  • This position requires advanced knowledge, skill and ability and has experience working with the Black/African American community. Demonstrates an understanding of the traditions, values and customs of this community. Understands cultural/racial/ethnic factors, including systemic advantage or disadvantage, generational trauma, and any factors related to non-dominant culture affecting community health.
  • Must be certified by the Oregon Health Authority as a Certified Lactation Consultant
  • Must be certified by Lamaze International or like agency as a Lamaze Childbirth Educator
  • Must possess a valid State issued drivers license

However, keep in mind we may consider some or all of the following when identifying the most qualified candidates.   • Experience in Parent Child Health
  • Experience facilitating/teaching birth/parent education
  • Deep understanding of and experience addressing the systemic barriers that perpetuate disparities for community members who experience marginalization
  • Transferable skills: Your transferable skills are any skills you have gained through education, work experience (including the military) or life experiences that are relevant for this position. Be sure to describe any transferable skills on your application and clearly explain how they apply to this position.

Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM some afterhour and weekend classes as needed

Work Location: This position works onsite at Walnut Park Complex located at 5329 NE Martin Luther Kind Blvd. Portland, OR 97211.

Serving The Public, Even During Disasters

Everyday, Multnomah County staff work together to serve as a safety net for our communities. During a disaster, this safety net becomes even more critical. All County employees have a role in serving the public during inclement weather, natural disaster, or other types of community emergency response. During these emergency responses, while typically there begins with a call for volunteers, county employees may ultimately be reassigned from their current position to a role in the emergency response in order to support the critical needs presented by our communities.
