Reports to : Sr. VP & Chief Operating Officer

Location : Atlanta, GA (

  • On-site )
  • Incumbent must work in office in Atlanta four (4) days per week and may work remotely one (1) day per week with manager approval

Summary :

The Director of Generation is a hands-on role responsible for directing activities associated with the construction, operation, maintenance and compliance of the MEAG generation fleet. Ensure the fleet is constructed and operated in an economical manner while ensuring the reliability of the resources. Provide motivation and strong leadership for the Generation staff. Support the Executive Team in developing and implementing the strategic plans. Provide MEAG Participants reliable, low cost electric power resources in a manner that assures that the Participants can remain competitive and receive the maximum value from these assets over the long term.

Scope of Responsibility :

This position is responsible for all aspects of the MEAG generation fleet, including acquiring fuel and ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements. Controls and manages all day to day activities associated with the generation fleet including oversight activities that provide for optimization of the resources by the Bulk Power staff. Drives the implementation of the strategic plans for achieving MEAG’s long term vision. Serves as MEAG primary representative on joint ownership and industry working groups and committees.

Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities :

Directs and oversees the Generation functions that include :

  • Asset Management - Manage MEAG's 1566 MWs of jointly owned coal and nuclear generation assets and a wholly owned 500 MW gas-fired combined cycle generating unit by monitoring unit operation, maintenance, Operating Agent performance and adherence to contract, plant modifications, and cost. Provide input for and review the preparation of the Operations & Maintenance (O&M) and capital budgets for the generating units. Manage an annual O&M budget of approximately $200 million for the jointly owned and combined cycle units.
  • Generation Construction - Management of all aspects of site selection, permitting, engineering, procurement and construction of new MEAG self-build generating assets or provide MEAG owner oversight for assets constructed by others.
  • Fuel Supply - Oversee the procurement, inventory management and risk management of fuel purchases (nuclear, coal and natural gas) for all generating assets. Manage an annual coal, gas and nuclear fuel budget of approximately $200 million and serve as the chairman of the Fuel Risk Oversight Committee (FROC).
  • Compliance - Ensure that the MEAG generation fleet meets all safety, environmental and reliability compliance requirements. Ensure all filings are complete and submitted in a timely manner. Provide input and influence of new regulatory requirements in all areas working with industry trades, reliability organizations, and co-owners.
  • Represent MEAG on various O&M, industry, and advisory committees.
  • Provide support to other MEAG Departments / Functions - budget inputs and review, invoice review and approval, technical issues information, positions, analysis of legislative, regulatory, and industry issues.
  • Staff Development - responsible for staff development needs and objectives to support company succession planning goals, including hiring, training, and performance management.
  • Qualifications :

  • Generally requires a Bachelor's degree in engineering, or equivalent, from an accredited college or university and at least 12 years of experience in the electric utility industry
  • 8 years or more in a management capacity with progressively increasing applicable responsibility.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with the MEAG Board, officers, managers, staff, Participant representatives, co-owners, consultants, counsel, and Participant retail customers.
  • Must be highly organized and adaptable to change.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills.
  • Must have a strong sense of propriety concerning confidential matters.
  • Experience in utility operations, generating plant operations, construction and associated regulatory requirements.
  • Public Power experience a plus.
  • A graduate degree in Business or Engineering would be desirable. A combination of education and related experience may be substituted in lieu of a degree.
