Job Description

The Pediatric Cardiac Sonographer II reports to the Pediatric Cardiac Sonographer Supervisor. Under indirect supervision, the Pediatric Cardiac Sonographer II provides high quality echocardiograms for interpretation and diagnosis by a Pediatric Cardiologist in a professional manner that is consistent with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. This role requires independent and efficient performance of clinical Pediatric Echo operations in the hospital and procedural setting, entering full preliminary reports, covering all MUSC Pediatric Echo Lab locations and shifts including call rotation. This role organizes and prioritizes patient exams and contributes to unit teamwork.

The Pediatric Cardiac Sonographer I reports to the Perioperative Interventional Cardiology and Imaging Manager. Under direct supervision, the Pediatric Cardiac Sonographer I provides high quality echocardiograms for interpretation and diagnosis by a Pediatric Cardiologist in a professional manner that is consistent with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. This role requires efficient performance of clinical Pediatric Echo operations in the hospital and procedural setting, entering full preliminary reports. The majority of the Sono I training will be at SJCH with a 1:1 clinical preceptor and with limited clinical site(s) coverage. This role organizes and prioritizes patient exams and contributes to unit teamwork. Applicants will remain in the Sono I role until able to pass the comprehensive pediatric board exam (usually 12-18 months post-hire).

Additional Job Description

Minimum Training and Education: Graduation from a Cardiovascular / Ultrasound program or equivalent experience, and certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) as a RDCS (Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer, PE), or Registered Congenital Cardiac Sonographer (RCCS) certification in Pediatrics by the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) required; Fetal Echocardiography (FE) preferred. Associate of Arts/Science or a Bachelor’s degree preferred. Two years minimum pediatric echocardiography work experience in performing M-Mode, 2-D, 3-D, Doppler, and color Doppler required. Fetal Echo and research experience preferred. Strong knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, hemodynamics, and complex congenital heart disease, pre and post-operatively, required. Echocardiography experience in the setting of Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Cath Lab preferred. This position requires travel to outreach locations working with the Pediatric Cardiologist and support team. This role requires the incumbent to take call for the Pediatric Echo Lab. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

(Infrequent) Ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force. (Frequent) Examples include: To transfer a 100 lb. patient that can not assist in the transfer requires 50 lbs. of force. For every 100 additional pounds, assistance will be required from another healthcare worker. 20 lbs. of force is needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet. 25 lbs. of force is required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (Continuous) Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception. (Continuous) Good peripheral vision capabilities. (Continuous) Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction. (Continuous) Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements. (Continuous) Ability to deal effectively with stressful situations.
