Job Description Summary

An Ophthalmic Clinical Coordinator is a specialized role in the field of ophthalmology that combines clinical coordination duties with the expertise of a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT). The COA or COT certification is awarded by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO), and it demonstrates that the individual has passed a certification exam and is skilled in assisting with the diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions.

In this dynamic role, the ophthalmic clinical coordinator will be responsible for clinical support, staff training, and the management of ophthalmic equipment to ensure efficient flow of clinics.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Operations Coordination: Managing patient flow, coordinating with ophthalmologists and staff, ensuring smooth clinical workflows, and overseeing patient care protocols.
  • Staff Education and Training: Providing continuous education for clinical staff on best practices, new technologies, safety protocols, and equipment usage. Tony is currently responsible for this, but it needs to be formalized as part of the role.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Ensuring all ophthalmic equipment is functioning properly, coordinating repairs and service agreements, and overseeing routine maintenance schedules to minimize downtime.
  • Compliance & Safety: Ensure all clinical and operational tasks adhere to safety standards, infection control protocols, and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) certification required with minimum of 4 years of experience.
  • Experience in ophthalmology, optometry, or a related field preferred.
  • Knowledge of ophthalmic procedures, equipment, diagnostic testing, and patient care practices.
  • Strong ability to educate and mentor staff on clinical processes, procedures, and equipment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a commitment to patient care and team development.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and collaborative environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Additional Job Description

Education: High School Degree or Equivalent Work Experience: 1 year specialized ophthalmic experience.

Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required
