Job Description
Elicits medical history, family history and constructs pedigree to assess risk for genetic disease occurrence or recurrence; evaluates complex medical and genetic literature from a variety of sources and incorporates into patient counseling and management; explains available testing options including risks, benefits and limitations of testing; coordinates genetic testing and return of results for patients and/or families; provides genetic education, counseling, and psychosocial support for patients/families; reviews referrals and triages cases; supports operations of genetics clinic; performs administrative and day-to-day operational clinical activities including record review and patient charting; writes detailed consultation reports conveying complex genetic concepts to patients and referring physicians; collaborates with genetic counseling team, MD supervisor(s) and multidisciplinary care team; facilitates referrals as indicated. Demonstrates in-depth medical knowledge in practice area(s) and interprets most genetic results with minimal oversight/guidance; identifies or creates patient support resources for indications encountered in practice; provides clinical supervision for genetic counseling students; teaches genetics/genetic counseling content to medical/genetic trainees; implements systems to collect, maintain and analyze operational data; collaborates on research and/or quality improvement projects; mentors new genetic counselor hires.
Additional Job Description
Master’s degree from an ACGC-accredited genetic counseling program. ABGC board certified. ≥5 years of experience in genetic counseling, with ≥1 year at MUSC
