Job Description Summary

We are currently seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Research Laboratory Technician to join our team. The primary responsibility will consist of multiplex immunofluorescence tissue staining, scanning, antibody optimization, and troubleshooting. The individual should be competent in research histologic processing of human and animal tissues, including tissue processing and embedding, microtomy/cryotomy sectioning, special stains, and immunohistochemistry (IHC) / immunofluorescence (IF) staining procedures

Job Description

35% Automated multiplex immunofluorescence staining, scanning, antibody optimization, and troubleshooting. Document and maintain accurate records of staining, protocol optimizations, and runs. Perform mathematical calculations required for laboratory methodology, including reagent preparation and dilutions

30% Basic histology procedures, including manual and automated staining of tissues with immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence procedures, routine H&E staining and special stains. Processing, embedding, sectioning tissue: Under direct supervision this individual will perform research histologic procedures on human and animal tissues to include but not limited to routine histology, grossing, processing and embedding, and microtomy/cryotomy sectioning for microscopic examination

10% Communication of results: Individual will work with colleagues, researchers, and supervisor to communicate results, troubleshoot, and for clarification when needed. Respond to BTA team, core users, and supervisor queries and other requests with high level of customer service and excellent communication skills, ensuring all customers are treated with respect, demonstrating a spirit of service and cooperation with a positive attitude while promoting teamwork. Attending weekly laboratory meeting

10% Inventory/lab management: Individual will monitor supplies and reagent inventory and will submit requests for orders as needed.

10% Slide scanning and image acquisition: The individual will set up a whole slide scanner for image acquisition of chromogenic (brightfield) and multiplex immunofluorescence-stained slides

5% Instrument operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance: Operate and maintain complex scientific instrumentation. Individual to perform general instrument maintenance and submit requests to schedule preventive maintenance as well as emergency repairs when needed.

MUSC Minimum Training And Experience Requirements:

  • A minimum of one year of experience working with multiplex immunofluorescence is preferred.
  • Experience with multiplex immunofluorescence pipelines, including Akoya Opals, PhenoImager HT, Vectra Polaris, or Lunaphore Comet, is preferred. Experience with IHC staining on an automated stainer such as the Ventana DISCOVERY ULTRA Research Staining System or Leica BOND is also preferred.

A bachelor's degree in a health-related field and journey-level work experience in the specialty area; or an associate degree or equivalent training in a health-related or technology field and advanced work experience in the specialty area. A master's degree in a health-related field and entry-level experience in the specialty area may be substituted for the requirements stated above. Previous technical supervisory work experience is required for supervisory positions.
