Job Description
MUSC Community Physicians is seeking a dedicated Advanced Practitioner (NP or PA) Psychiatric Hospitalist to provide high-quality, compassionate care to patients at the Leatherman Behavioral Health Pavilion. The Advanced Practitioner will work collaboratively with psychiatrists, medical staff, and interdisciplinary teams to manage psychiatric patient acute and chronic medical conditions, ensuring holistic and integrated care. They will also work as a Hospitalist within the Pee Dee Division in a medical center on a rotational basis.
Fair Labor Standards Act Status: Salaried – Exempt
Scheduled Work Hours/Shift: 7AM-7PM, 7 on 7 off schedule.
Patient Population Focus: Inpatient
Patient Population Age Range: 12 years to death
Required Training and Experience
Required Minimum Training:
- Physician Assistant (PA): Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant.

- FNP (Family NP): (birth to death) Stable chronic disease state management, primary care across the lifespan.
Required Experience: Must have at least 6 months of hospital medicine experience
Preferred Training and Experience:
- Physician Assistant (PA): Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant.

- AGACNP/ACNP (Adult Gerontology Acute Care NP/Acute Care Nurse Practitioner): Adult pts (13 years to death), acutely ill or injured, potentially unstable, or technologically dependent (vents, drips, monitors, etc.)
Preferred Experience: Minimum of 1 year as a Physician Assistant or FNP/AGACNP in Hospital medicine and Psychiatric care or ICU experience.
Degree of Supervision: Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will have a Primary Supervising/Collaborating Physician employed by MUSC assigned and will report directly to this physician.
Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations:
- Currently licensed (or eligible) in the state of South Carolina as a Physician Assistant by the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners or as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or a Family Nurse Practitioner with the SC Board of Nursing.
- Requires certification in Basic Life Support (BLS). If BLS is not current, provider must enroll and have received certificate by start date.
- Requires certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). If ACLS is not current, provider must enroll and have received certificate by start date.
- Requires certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). If PALS is not current, provider must enroll and have received certificate by start date.
- DHEC and DEA license applications must be submitted prior to first day.
Job Duties
Provides direct care to patients through the following activities:
- Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations
- Manage acute and chronic medical illnesses in medical/surgical and psychiatric patients
- Collaborate with psychiatrists to develop and implement treatment plans that address medical and psychiatric needs
- Evaluates and treats patients based on history and physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guidelines
- Initiates referrals to other health care provides, and/or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician
- Documents and bills for direct care provided
- Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice
- Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research
- Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization
- Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education
- Potential to precept students at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider student; and facilitates the learning of other new team members
- APRN or PA must maintain licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc., as required by applicable policies and state law

Physical Requirements
Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking, and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see, and recognize objects nearby and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs. ( /-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs. of force, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
