Summary
The Zucker Institute for Innovation Commercialization (Zucker Institute) is a key collaborator within the MUSC innovation ecosystem that collectively generates recognition and impact from the enterprise’s innovations across the domains of scholarly research, education, and public health. Established as a 501(c)(3) MUSC affiliated organization, the Zucker Institute’s missions are to evaluate and manage the intellectual property generated by the faculty, staff, and students at MUSC, to lead the commercialization of such intellectual property to ensure it will provide a benefit to the public, and to support and facilitate entrepreneurial and economic development activities that provide opportunities for research funding and elevate MUSC's reputation. This office works closely and collaboratively with leaders from several offices across the MUSC enterprise, including the Office of Innovation, Office of External Affairs, the Office of the Vice President for Research, the MUSC Health innovation team, the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, and the Office of the General Counsel to achieve its missions.

Founded in 1824 in Charleston, MUSC is home to the oldest medical school in the South as well as the state’s only integrated academic health sciences center, with a unique charge to serve the state through education, research and patient care. Job Description
Reporting to the VP of Intellectual Property and Licensing and the Chief Technology Officer of the Zucker Institute, the Biopharma Technology Manager is responsible for working with MUSC faculty to identify promising technologies and then leading the effort through intellectual property protection, from early-stage concepts to licensable, proof-of-concept stage products.
Responsibilities for the Biopharma Technology Manager role include, but are not limited to :
- Participate in MUSC’s scientific community and develop strong relationships with faculty to identify technologies with clinical benefit and commercial viability.
- Assess the commercial potential of disclosed biopharma technologies and assist the IP team with prior art searches to help develop IP protection strategies.
- Market biopharma innovations to industry partners and prospective licensees.
- Build relationships and foster collaborations between inventors and industry partners and other stakeholders to advance the development and commercialization of technologies.
- Coordinate with the IP and licensing team to develop value propositions and commercialization strategies for biopharma technologies, formulating next steps for inventors and ZI teams, and communicating with inventors.
- Adopt in-house processes and CRM utilization to manage biopharma technology portfolio. Assist in optimization / evolution of portfolio management processes as needed.
- Maintain inventory of biopharma portfolio and provide intermittent reports and updates to the ZI team.
- Represent ZI at conferences, networking events, and industry meetings to promote its technology portfolio.
- Educate faculty, researchers, and students on IP protection, commercialization processes, and industry collaboration.
- Coordinate with the IP and licensing team on deal structure including term sheet development.
- Other duties as assigned.
