Job Description Summary

Responsible for high quality casting, splinting services and providing patient care under the direction of a physician or licensed healthcare provider in a clinical practice setting. May be required to provide back-up support for other locations.

Job Description

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under direction of the physician and clinical educator’s mentorship learns casting techniques, splinting and specialty bracing.
  • Maintains exam room supplies, and cast room supplies as needed.
  • Responsible for cleanliness of cast room area as well as sterilization and cleanliness of patient environment as required by OSHA, DHEC and UMA.
  • Maintains timely flow of patients, assists with scheduling of appointments and referrals based on urgency and availability. Screens patients for appropriate information and provides patients education, as appropriate for diagnosis and treatment.
  • Assist in maintaining patient safety and providing patient education.
  • Measure and fit patients for splints, immobilizers, fixation devices and soft goods under direction of the physician.
  • Other duties included- rooming patients, taking vitals and health history, documenting in an electronic medical record. Duties do not include the ordering and administration of medications.
  • Measure vital signs (temp, pulse, resp, BP, pain, oxygen sat).
  • Measure height and weight.
  • Measure head, chest, and abdominal circumferences as appropriate to patient population.
  • Assist patient with nutritional, hygiene, elimination, ambulation, and comfort related needs.
  • Prepare patients for exam and minor office procedures.
  • Perform clerical duties and ensure overall financial well-being of the clinic operations.
  • Schedule tests and procedures. Utilizes correct communication tools and devices in providing care.
  • The care team member must efficiently establish a caring, trusting relationship with the caller and elicit information related to the reason for the call and current symptoms.
  • Uses medical equipment safely and effectively in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions, policy, and/or clinic guidelines to ensure patient and staff safety.
  • Demonstrates excellent customer service by incorporating AIDET, MUSC Excellence, and Service Recovery

Additional Job Description

Required Minimum Training and Education: Requirements include one of the following: High school diploma or GED. One year experience in related area of medical practice as RMA, EMT, medic, CMA or PCT.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Current BLS. Expectation to complete certification for ASOP Orthopedic Tech within one year of hire. Preferred but not required Athletic trainer, certification from (AMT) American Medical Technologist or (AAMA) American Association of Medical Assistants or Military trained with appropriate military certification.

Physical Requirements: Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs ( /-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36” to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
