Summary

Director of Counseling and Psychological Services & Co-Director of Student Health & Wellbeing

The Director of the Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) provides leadership for the operations of the CAPS and co-leads the Student Health & Wellbeing Care clinic as part of the Division of Education Innovation and Student Life (EISL). Reporting to the Associate Provost for EISL, the Director of the CAPS serves a critical and important role in providing progressive, positive, and effective leadership in the institution’s commitment to the promotion of behavioral health and well-being of MUSC students. The clinic provides in-person and virtual behavioral health care services and health promotion programs to eligible students at MUSC, and provides consultation to college leadership, faculty, and staff.

Aligned with the MUSC strategic plan, EISL provides services to students and campus stakeholders to support a successful academic experience and enhance the development of personal and social responsibility while fostering a safe, healthy, inclusive, and supportive community at MUSC.

Job Description

Clinical Services to Students & Consultation : In person and telehealth visits

  • 35% Function as an independent credentialed member of the MUSC medical staff.  Develop, implement, and document mental health assessments, treatment plans, and therapeutic interventions for a panel of individual students and couples. Conduct mandated evaluations for MUSC students and provide summary and recommendations to Deans, Progress Committees, or BSIT, etc.
  • 35% Provide clinical consultation to CAPS professional staff regarding patient care issues and decision-making. Provide clinical supervision for Psychiatry Residents and Fellows and other clinical trainees to include meeting weekly or bi-weekly to review treatment planning, patient care, and progress in treatment. Review and co-sign documentation of care provided by Psychiatry Residents or other trainees. Consult with Deans, Associate Deans, Faculty, and members of the Behavioral Support and Intervention Team regarding students of concern who have serious acute or chronic mental health problems. Review these students with CAPS team members providing care. Develop educational resources on mental health topics for students, staff, and faculty. Provide educational presentations for students, staff, and faculty.
  • 15% Administration : Leadership / Mentoring / Supervision

  • Establish, communicate, and maintain a departmental vision that reflects institutional and divisional goals and priorities and appropriate professional standards
  • Develop and oversee strategic plan for CAPS, including goals and objectives, outcomes, and identification of resource needs that aligns with MUSC’s strategic plan
  • Provide leadership for the recruitment and development of a skilled, diverse workforce in CAPS, capable of meeting the needs of a diverse student population.
  • Design, develop, and oversee mental health services for MUSC students.  Develop procedures for clinic operations.  Direct and monitor daily operations of the CAPS clinic.
  • Provide clinical and administrative oversight and evaluation of the professional staff and supervision for the RN / Office Manager.
  • Work closely Director of Student Health Services to promote the overall physical, mental, emotional, and social health of students within an integrated care framework.
  • Coordinate with Associate Provost for EISL, Department of Psychiatry and EISL Finance Director regarding contractual services for Attending Psychiatrists.
  • Identify training needs of staff members.  Evaluate and prioritize training needs in light of resources and costs.
  • Identify needed equipment / supplies and prioritize based on budget considerations.  Review and monitor expenditures.
  • Obtain and review utilization data for clinic and individual providers to monitor effectiveness of CAPS services and provider caseloads.

  • Review and implement national legal and professional best practice standards regarding patient care, documentation, confidentiality, and clinic operations, etc.
  • 5% Service :   Institutional / Community

  • Serve on University committees as needed and participate in administrative and informational meetings including EISL Directors’ meetings, Student Affairs Advisory Council, assigned committees, etc.
  • Collaborate with other CAPS clinic around the state and nation
  • Facilitate liaison with other MUSC and state mental health and health programs to coordinate services.
  • Participate in University and College orientation activities.
  • Participate in the accreditation processes for the six colleges including the College of Medicine GME Psychiatry Residency and Child Fellowship Programs.
  • 5% Scholarship :   Presentations / Publications / Professional Development

  • Engage in scholarly activities at conferences and workshops focused on health care in higher education institutions
  • Participate with other faculty members in applications for grants and other funding mechanisms when appropriate
  • 5% Other duties as assigned

    Minimum Experience and Training Requirements :

    Education :

    The position requires a Ph.D. in clinical or counseling psychology or a Psy.D. from a graduate program accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) and completion of an APA-accredited clinical internship.

    License / Certification :

    The individual must be licensed to practice independently in South Carolina and authorized or eligible to provide interjurisdictional services under the authority of the Psychology Interjurisdictional compact (PSYPACT).

    Experience :

    A minimum of five years of post-licensure clinical experience with demonstrated knowledge of and proficiency in evidence-based mental health assessment and treatment for adults is required.  The position also requires experience in administrative leadership, clinical supervision, and fiscal management. Strong consultation and interpersonal skills are required.

  • Proven ability to conceptualize, develop and implement large complex projects. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to gather data and analyze reports to make data-based decisions

  • Demonstrate a high level of personal ethics, professional integrity, and moral development to engender total confidence in SHS and Student Health & Wellbeing Care
