POSITION TITLE: Nutrition Specialist
EMPLOYEE UNIT: Classified Professional
REPORT TO: Food Service Supervisor
STATUS: Full-Time, 12-month
OBJECTIVE:
Assist the Food and Nutrition Supervisor in the coordination and implementation of all Food and Nutrition Services operations according to local, state, and federal government requirements including necessary audit and review reporting.
Plan menus for breakfast, lunch and snack programs for students and staff as well as modified diets for students, teachers, and staff with specific nutrition-related health conditions.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the Food and Nutrition Supervisor’s Guidance:
Management
- Assist with interviewing, reference checks, and onboarding requirements for Human Resources
- Assists in control of food and supply costs with cycle menus, inventory control, proper storage conditions and ordering of food and supplies
- Assists with site monitoring of production and satellite sites for compliance with regulations, policies, and procedures
- Assist in leading Summer Food Service Program, including planning and staffing
Food and Nutrition
- Plan and evaluate menus to ensure compliance according to established regulatory and policy guidelines
- Assist Food and Nutrition Supervisor in implementing and maintaining state and federal requirements for the department including audits and reviews
- Plan menus and evaluate meal participation and sales trends to continue to engage and increase student and staff participation
- Evaluate food and beverage products according to established nutrition criteria to meet the needs of student menus and a la carte’ sales
- Evaluate product labels to meet the individualized needs of students with specific nutrition-related health conditions, (i.e.: diabetes, food allergies, etc.)
- Modify and standardize recipes to improve cost efficiency and nutritional contents (reduced fat, sodium, sugar, and/or calorie content)
- Coordinate and monitor special dietary needs of district students, including menu planning, communication with district staff and student families
- Assist Food and Nutrition Supervisor with training, monitoring, and maintaining district food quality, safety, sanitation, and standardization in the operation.
- Maintain internal production records and menus
- Maintain all records of ingredients, recipes, and menus using Mosaic software including item projections and item usage.
- Upload menus to MealViewer software program for the District webpage
Nutrition Education
- Assist with training, monitoring, providing good customer service, and standardization in the operation
- Plan nutrition education messages for the point of sale for marketing food and beverages
- Provide medical follow up education to parents and staff upon request regarding modified diets, school district menu plans and portions with specific nutrition-related health conditions, (i.e.: diabetes, food allergies, etc.)
School Health/Wellness Coordination
- Act as liaison between student’s health care provider and the school system to ensure physician nutrition orders are implemented in the school setting
- Work with school nurses, parents and/or Individual Education Plan (IEP) teams to establish nutrition care plans to meet the individualized needs of students with specific nutrition-related health conditions and departmental accommodation requirements
- Work with school nurses to evaluate the effectiveness of nutrition and wellness program of individual students
- Participate in local school wellness policy discussions

QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent educational experience with academic major in specific area (food and nutrition, food service management, dietetics, family and consumer sciences, nutrition education, culinary arts, business, or a related field), or Bachelor's degree in any academic major and state-recognized certificate for school nutrition directors, or Bachelor's in any academic major and at least 2 years of relevant school nutrition programs experience, or Associate's degree or equivalent educational experience with academic major in specific areas, (food and nutrition, food service management, dietetics, family and consumer sciences, nutrition education, culinary arts, business, or a related field) and at least 2 years of relevant school nutrition programs experience.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus while working with computers, written materials, reports, data, etc.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. The position requires the commitment of professional working hours that may require the employee to extend beyond a typical 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. work day. The employee will frequently work in different areas of the district including in/at desks, on or near the floor, standing, in movement while supervising or assisting others, etc. The employee will usually work in indoor temperatures but may assist in kitchens or outdoors.
