What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Maintenance/Grounds Worker - Summer 2025 position at Muscatine Community School District?
Muscatine Schools is hiring Summer Maintenance/Grounds Workers for the Summer of 2025. These are seasonal maintenance positions during the summer months while school is dismissed for summer break (approx. 2.5 months). There are a variety of duties involved in this position. These positions are flexible and vary in hours/day and days/week throughout the summer.
These positions pay $17.66/hr. All new employees of Muscatine Schools will be required to complete a pre-employment background check and onboarding/training.
The candidate chosen for hire will be required to complete a background check, work steps pre-employment physical, and onboarding and training session with the Dept. of Human Resources.
All essential functions must be performed on-site. Bilingual preferred or highly desired. All positions are open until filled.
Normal Work Day Begins: Varies. Applicant must be flexible and prepared to be available on-call for any unanticipated emergencies/events related to district facilities and the maintenance department.
OBJECTIVE:
To keep all school buildings and equipment functioning safely and operating at peak efficiency. Assist in the day-to-day operation of the district as an educational entity.
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Electrical repair limited to replacement of switches, receptacles, ballasts and other minor repairs.
- Plumbing repair limited to repair of flush meters, faucets and other minor plumbing equipment.
- Changing filters and lubrication of heating, cooling and ventilating equipment.
- Cleaning boilers and pressure vessels.
- Carpentry assistant and remodeling laborer.
- Clean, connect and operate personal computers and peripherals, scoreboards, telephone systems, audio-visual equipment and electronic temperature control systems.
- Clean and lubricate refrigeration equipment.
- Transportation of various school vehicles, equipment, parts and supplies.
- Leak detection of piping systems.
- Emergency window repairs, replacement and glazing.
- Adjust panic bars, door closers and locks.
- General maintenance of buildings requiring caulking, painting and graffiti removal.
- Inspection of sports and playground equipment and perform minor repairs and adjustments.
- Layout, painting and maintaining athletic fields.
- All forms of grounds maintenance, road repair, concrete work and snow removal.
- Assists other members of maintenance staff.
- Other duties of a similar nature to be assigned as needed.
MINOR DUTIES:
- Perform some custodial activities or coordinate custodial activities.
- Maintain good public relations with student, staff, administration and community.
Knowledge, skills and abilities required to carry out the job satisfactorily.
- Basic knowledge of maintenance tools, equipment, and supplies
- Excellent communication skills while working with faculty, staff and the community
- Generally available for call-in
- Knowledge of the various district facilities and community
- Must be able to communicate with many different types of people
- Must be a self-starter and capable of organizing work
- Position requires that a person be capable of organizing the work and setting priorities.
- Position requires that a person be capable of referring employees and issues up the chain of command as needed
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must be mechanically inclined, have the ability to learn, and receptive to on-the-job training in other skill levels of maintenance work. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license, clear both a police records and child abuse registry check, and pass a pre-employment “work steps” physical.

Employee must be very mobile and able to make multiple trips in and out of buildings throughout the district on an ongoing basis. The employee is frequently required to kneel, crouch multiple times, crawl on hands and knees, and bend forward multiple times. The employee in this position lifts/carries 55 lbs. occasionally and 10 lbs. frequently. Employee must be able to lift objects such as gas cans, lawnmowers, and ramps, etc. when loading and unloading goods, working with equipment or moving furniture. Employee must capable of driving a snowplow in the winter and a lawn tractor in the summer. This position requires bending, stooping, twisting and lifting.

The employee will move, stand, squat on an assortment of surfaces including tile, wood, terrazzo, and concrete. The employee will be required to work outside during hot or cold weather, rain snow, sleet and icy conditions while performing their duties. The employee may stand and move on surfaces that are damp.
The noise level in the work environment is moderate. The position requires the commitment of professional working hours that may require the employee to extend beyond a typical 8:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. workday. The employee will frequently work in different areas of the building including in/at desks, on or near the floor, standing, in movement while working indoors or outdoors. The employee will work both indoors and outdoors, as duties require.
