JOB REQUIREMENTS ANALYSIS

 

POSITION TITLE: Operations Support Services

EMPLOYEE UNIT:  CMM/Transportation 

REPORTS TO: Custodial Maintenance Supervisor/Transportation Supervisor

SUPERVISES: None

 

Normal Work Day: 7:00AM-3:30PM - Shifts vary

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

Keep the school’s appearance clean, safe and in good working order and provide students with safe and efficient transportation to and from school.  

 

MAJOR CUSTODIAL DUTIES:

  • Checks to ensure all exit doors are open and all intruder locks are working properly during hours of building occupancy.
  • Raises the American flag at or before 8:00 a.m. and lowers it at or after 3:30 p.m. (practice varies by shift and school).
  • Cleans classrooms and corridors as scheduled.
  • Scrubs and disinfects rest room floors, shower rooms where applicable and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains.
  • Reports major repairs needed promptly according to the standard procedure of the department.
  • Reports any damage to school property which would include any vandalism or break-ins according to the standard procedure of the department.
  • Remains on school premises during paid hours except for lunch breaks. 
  • Shares responsibility for opening and closing of building (doors and windows secured, lights off except those left on for safety). Custodians are to perform lock-downs along with other employees who are equally responsible for insuring the building is secure.
  • Adjusts furniture periodically and as needed to meet student needs in the classroom.
  • Cleans chalkboards and/or whiteboards as needed.
  • Dusts furniture and locker tops as time allows, with emphasis first to computer labs.
  • Keeps floors clean and clear and in a good state of preservation by wet mopping and sweeping regularly between scheduled stripping, waxing and buffing.
  • Changes accessible filters as needed or as scheduled.
  • Washes windows inside and out as time and weather permits. Washes door panels, lockers and wall areas as needed, ensuring as a top priority that school entrances are clean and presentable.
  • Keeps building premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean.
  • Notifies maintenance of irregularities in heat, ventilation, or air conditioning systems to provide appropriate temperatures and ensure economical use of fuel, water, and electricity.
  • Seasonal: removes snow and ice from grounds, shovels, salts, plows, sands, mows, and clears litter and rubbish.
  • Locker repair and maintenance.
  • Performs yard keeping chores and picks up litter as time permits.
  • Keeps inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel and notifies courier or operating department for requisition.
  • Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required.
  • Complies with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash, rubbish and waste.
  • Makes minor building repairs as time, materials, tools and knowledge allow, calling Supervisor or seeking other assistance if needed.
  • Other duties of a similar nature to be assigned as needed.

 

Other factors:

  • Attend custodial workshops offered in the Muscatine School System
  • Must be able to work efficiently and effectively with a large variety of people and must genuinely enjoy working around children
  • Ability to assist in the enforcement of fire codes

 

SUMMER CUSTODIAL WORK:

The following duties are examples of what is required of the Custodial/Maintenance department during the summer throughout the district, though these duties may or may not occur each summer at each building:

  • Painting, sanding, washing walls, changing light bulbs, cleaning filters, repairing desks and chairs, stripping floors, refinish/wax floors, steaming clean kitchens, washing furniture
  • Other duties of a similar nature to be assigned as needed

 

MAJOR BUS DRIVER DUTIES:

  • Drive the routes and or trips as assigned without deviation(s) unless authorized to do so or because of a specific emergency, allowing common sense to dictate otherwise for that specific incident.
  • Works with a variety of students, parents, guardians and school personnel.
  • Maintain discipline and control on the bus at stops, transfer stations and while in operation; this includes the Muscatine School Discipline Program.
  • Maintain assigned bus by completing daily inspections and other pre-trip duties, notifying mechanics of any and all mechanical problems. 
  • Maintain driver records such as time cards, physicals, school permits.
  • Monitor radio and provide radio communication as needed.
  • May meet with the Special Education teachers to review a student’s disabilities and how the Driver might better meet the student’s needs as well as improve behavior on the bus.
  • Other duties of a similar nature to be assigned as needed.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The District requires knowledge of equipment and cleaning products used in cleaning building. The Employee must attend orientation training and on-the-job training.

 

Must meet State and Federal DOT requirements plus additional training required by the Muscatine School District for regular education or special education route drivers; CDL, bus permit, valid physical, alcohol and drug screens as required by applicable federal or state regulations. Completion of a criminal background check including child and dependent adult abuse registry check. Physical and chauffeurs license and state permit. Computer skills useful for maintaining routing and student database computer systems.

The following list of critical demands is representative but not all-inclusive of the job: while performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, stoop, squat walk, climb, use hands and fingers to handle and/or feel objects/tools/controls, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to kneel, crouch multiple times, crawl on hands and knees, and bend forward multiple times. The employee will be required to lift 50 lbs. 32 inches high, carry 50 lbs. a distance of 50 feet, and place 30 lbs. at a height of 44.5 inches multiple times. The employee must be capable of carrying an 8 ft. step ladder a distance of 50 feet and go up and down the ladder to a height of 4 rungs multiple times. Must be capable of pushing 50 lbs. a distance of 25 feet. Must be capable of shoveling for minutes at a time. The employee in this position lifts/carries 55 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently, and pushes with a maximum force of 150 lbs. a distance of 50 feet.  Employee may be required to lift 108 lbs. on occasion. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.  Must be able to step up to a height of 15 inches multiple times a day, safely sit behind the wheel of a school bus and clasp seatbelt comfortable across hips, assist in evacuating students in case of an emergency.  May be required to reposition equipment such as a wheelchair.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus while supervising students, and while working with computers, written materials, reports, etc. Employee must be capable of performing bus inspections and working under stressful conditions with students, staff and public. This position requires good eyesight and hearing.  In some cases, employee must be capable of assisting physically and or mentally handicapped student(s) through lifting/hearing/seeing/carrying.


WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
The Driver will move, stand, squat on an assortment of surfaces including tile, wood, terrazzo, and concrete. The Driver will be required to work outside during hot or cold weather, rain snow, sleet and icy conditions while performing their duties. The Driver will stand and move on surfaces that are damp.


The noise level in the work environment is moderate. The position requires the commitment of professional working hours that may require the employee to extend beyond a typical 8:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. workday. The employee will frequently work in different areas of the building including in/at desks, on or near the floor, standing, in movement while working indoors or outdoors.  The employee will usually work in indoor temperatures but will work outdoors as duties require.
