Muscatine Schools is hiring a Security Guard/Officer to join the Security team at Muscatine High School. The person in this position will work closely with Building Aides and the Administration to ensure the daily safety and security of our students and staff. This is a full-time position scheduled for 192 days/year. The current hourly rate is $22.76/hour. All essential functions must be performed on-site. Bilingual preferred or highly desired.

All candidates chosen for hire will be required to pass a comprehensive background screening and completed an onboarding process with the Department of Human Resources.

OBJECTIVE:

To ensure that school building and grounds are safe and secure for students and staff. 

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

  1. Supervise the arrival and departure of students.
  1. Responsible for observation of outside areas including parking lots and walkways. 
  1. Become acquainted with the students and assist in directing their activities in the lunchroom, corridors, and grounds. 
  1. Work with the school resource officer as necessary.
  1. Maintain total campus awareness and identify imminent problems.
  1. Provide leadership to committees working on building/security and safety issues.
  1. Restrain students who are physically out of control (follow CPI model).
  1. Remove unauthorized non-students from the building.
  1. Be available to other schools in the district in crisis situations.
  1. Coordinate and work with building administrators and take appropriate action in the administrator’s absence. 
  1. Provide written reports on school incidents, student behavior matters, and safety/security issues.
  1. Become familiar with available technology that is related to campus security.
  1. Lock doors and secure building after school.
  1. Carry and operate a walkie-talkie and escort students to restroom/office as needed.
  1. Deliver messages from the office to students.
  1. Lunchroom duty as directed by high school administration.
  1. Outdoor supervision of students as necessary.
  1. Clear halls at the end of the day and monitor boarding of busses.
  1. Assist in security matters during extra-curricular activities.
  1. Other duties of a similar nature to be assigned as needed. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Prior experience as a security guard is required, prior experience as a school security guard will be strongly preferred.  Must have a valid driver’s license.  The ability to work well with staff and students is a necessity.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle and/or feel objects, tools or controls; talk and hear.  The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and forward 0 to 24 inches and on occasion up to 36 inches.  The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp items.  The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds 0 to 12 feet and occasionally up to 20 feet, such as curriculum materials, desks, chairs, and boxes.  The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables and carts.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus while supervising students and working with computers, written materials, reports, assessment data, etc.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.  The position requires the commitment of professional working hours that may require the employee to extend beyond a typical 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. workday.  The employee will frequently work in different areas of the classroom including in/at desks, on or near the floor, standing, in movement while supervising indoor and outdoor activities, etc.  The employee will usually work in indoor temperatures but will work outdoors when supervising students outside of the classroom.

  • Excellent oral and written communication including letters to students, group/public speaking, presentations, supervisory and instructional to the public, staff, and students
  • Able to work well with students, teachers, counselors, parents and other job-related persons.
  • Ability to intervene in crisis situations
  • A basic understanding of computer technology
  • Human relation skills, particularly with students.
  • Proficient with audio equipment, video equipment and other electronic devices.
  • Understand the operation of building systems including security, intercom, telephone, fire and alarm systems
