PRIMARY FUNCTION: The job of Bus Mechanic is done for the purpose/s of ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition including determining needed repairs and/or replacements on district vehicles; performing required repairs and preventive maintenance; and providing written documentation of repairs to meet district, state, and federal requirements.

1. Educational Level: |
High School Diploma or GED preferred |
2. Certification/License Required: |
Valid Driver’s License - CDL with “P” and “S” endorsements must be obtained as part of the job requirements within six months of hire date. |
3. Experience: |
Considerable experience as an automotive mechanic or heavy equipment mechanic |
4. Physical Activities: |
Routine physical activities that are required to fulfill job responsibilities; walking, standing, kneeling, negotiating stairs and ladders, lift and transport 75 pounds over short distances |
5. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: |
Written and oral communication; electro-mechanical abilities; methods of maintaining vehicles, methods of storage and removal of hazardous materials; and safety practices and procedures; strong knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel engines. |
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
1. |
Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance. |
2. |
Diagnoses vehicle malfunctions for the purpose of determining needed vehicle repairs and/or replacements. |
3. |
Fabricates parts for the purpose of providing items necessary for repairs. |
4. |
Inspects assigned vehicles (e.g. brake systems, oil levels, coolant, tire pressure, wiper blades, fan belts, exterior and interior condition, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the vehicle is in a safe operating condition. |
5. |
Performs routine vehicle maintenance program (e.g. oil change, tire rotation, brake check, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining vehicles in a safe operating condition and meeting mandated requirements. |
6. |
Performs minor body work (e.g. front ends, upholstery, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining the appearance and safe operation of the vehicles. |
7. |
Prepares written materials (e.g. repair and maintenance logs, parts lists, warrant claims, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and meeting mandated requirements. |
8. |
Responds to road calls regarding disabled vehicles for the purpose of performing emergency repair work in the field. |
9. |
Attend unit-in-service and safety meetings for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions. |
10. |
Cleans assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior for the purpose of maintaining appearance, sanitation and safety of vehicle. |
11. |
Maintains tools, equipment and/or shop area for the purpose of ensuring the availability of tools and equipment, and safety within the workspace. |
12. |
Maintains records of repairs, costs, vehicle warranties, etc. for the purpose of documenting required information and meeting regulatory requirements. |
13. |
Repairs vehicle systems and components, etc. (e.g. diesel/gasoline engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operation condition. |
14. |
Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. |
