Associate Conservator, Objects (Regular, Full-Time)

Conservation Center

Reporting to the Senior Conservator, Objects, the Associate Conservator in Objects will assist in the preservation, conservation, and restoration of the museum’s collection of three-dimensional objects, including sculptures, artifacts, and decorative arts. This role involves examining and treating objects, conducting preventive conservation measures, and collaborating with curatorial staff to ensure the care and longevity of the collection. This role also involves project coordination on behalf of conservation, for multiple gallery installations. 

This position is a 1-year term starting Jan 01, 2025 - December 31, 2025

Responsibilities:

  • Perform conservation assessments and treatments on a variety of objects, including cleaning, stabilization, and repair.

  • Document treatment procedures, materials used, and the condition of objects before and after treatment.

  • Maintain accurate and detailed records in the conservation database.

  • Monitor and manage environmental conditions to prevent deterioration of the collection.

  • Develop and implement storage and display solutions to ensure the safety and stability of objects.

  • Conduct condition surveys and risk assessments to inform preventive measures.

  • Research materials, techniques, and historical context of objects to inform treatment decisions.

  • Prepare condition reports, treatment proposals, and recommendations for future care.

  • Contribute to the development of conservation policies and procedures.

  • Work closely with curatorial, education, and registration staff to support exhibitions, loans, and collection management.

  • Participate in interdisciplinary teams for special projects and exhibitions.

  • Provide conservation advice and training to museum staff and volunteers.

  • Stay current with advancements in conservation techniques and materials.

  • Attend professional conferences and workshops to enhance skills and knowledge.

  • Contribute to publications and presentations as opportunities arise.

Benefits:

  • The expected annual salary for this Los Angeles, CA-based position is $75,000.00 – $80,000.00, subject to change, and the position is eligible for LACMA’s comprehensive benefits package, including a pension plan.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Conservation, with a focus on objects conservation.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in conservation, with a strong background in the treatment of three-dimensional objects.

  • Knowledge of conservation principles, techniques, and materials.

  • Familiarity with museum standards and practices related to conservation and collections care.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong communication and organizational skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Proficiency in conservation documentation and databases.

  • Ability to lift and move objects, sometimes weighing up to 50 pounds.
