Head of Publications (Regular Full-Time)
Publications
Reporting to the Senior Deputy Director for Art Administration & Collections, the Head of Publications develops and manages, to the highest standard, an encyclopedic publications program featuring scholarship and research of twelve curatorial departments, across multiple digital and print platforms. This position manages the activities of the Publications and Rights & Reproductions departments, as well as the Graphic Design and Photographic Services departments, including budget and supervision of staff and freelancers.
Responsibilities
- Supports exhibitions and collections by providing consultation and conceptualization, business plan and financial oversight, editing and project management for approximately 5 10 print publications and 1 3 digital publications per year
- Oversees editing and development of digital exhibition guides, exhibition labels and other environmental graphics
- Devises and implements strategy for trade distribution of publications
- Oversees licensing of museum images and publishing assets, working with General Counsel to ensure compliance with copyright law and LACMA s own fair use guidelines
- Facilitates storytelling process to inform production of interpretive materials developed in conjunction with exhibitions and collection presentations across multiple platforms
- Ensures integration of Spanish and other language into interpretive materials as needed
- Participates in museum s exhibition planning and collection development processes
- Creates systems that promote cross-departmental collaboration and enhance productivity
- Leads ongoing development of innovative online, print-on-demand, collection book initiative (Collator), including management of image and text database, front and back-end web interfaces, a digital print production flow, press and marketing strategies, fulfillment and financial processing, and customer support
- Meets periodically with Museum Director regarding institutional Publications strategies and special projects
- Mentors staff and research fellows

- The expected annual salary for this Los Angeles, CA based position is $160,000 - $175,000, subject to change, and the position is eligible for LACMA s comprehensive benefits package, including pension plan.

Qualifications
- Master s degree in Art History, Literature, or related field
- At least ten years of experience in Museum Publishing, Art Publishing, or closely related field
- Superior project management skills
- Strong communication skills
- High level of comfort working within a creative environment and with fixed deadlines
- Skilled problem solver
- Ability to work with precision and creativity within tight budgets
- Flexibility to accommodate organizational changes
