Curatorial Intern, Decorative Arts and Design (Temporary, Part-Time)
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION
The Decorative Arts and Design department seeks an upper-level undergraduate or graduate-level intern to support two exhibitions related to 20th century domestic design in the United States and Europe. The intern will have the opportunity to participate in the development and research of a major exhibition as well as a collection exhibition, to learn about this era of design, and to gain insights into the exhibition and acquisition process. Potential projects include: researching and identifying contextual images and film clips, confirming biographical and artwork details for the exhibition catalogue and labels, and researching potential exhibition-related acquisitions. The intern will report to the Curator, Decorative Arts and Design.
This is a paid internship, 16 hours per week, $17.28 per hour.
Anticipated Internship period: Approximately Feb.1, 2025-May 1, 2025
The internship is at LACMA’s main campus with possibility of partial remote work.
The Intern will gain knowledge and experience in the following areas:
Researching design works from the permanent collection to confirm object details (e.g., design date, designer, manufacturer, etc.).
Researching in film and image databases; identifying clips for exhibition purposes.
Creating short bibliographies and pulling primary and secondary source materials related to objects under consideration for acquisitions; comparing past sales and auction records for possible acquisitions.
Potential opportunity to write a blog post or contribute a short text for the website.
Opportunity to shadow curatorial team in meetings related to the exhibition and interface with colleagues in other museum departments.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
- This internship is appropriate for candidates studying design history, art history, history, visual studies, architecture, curatorial or museum studies, and related fields.
