Museum Associate

MOCA Museum Associates are key members of the museum’s Education and Guest Experience teams. They are responsible for delivering outstanding customer service and educational opportunities and being positive representatives of MOCA at all times. This position will provide support at the front desk, within the galleries, in the classroom and offsite community outreach events. A successful candidate will be highly interested in the arts and education and possess strong customer service skills.

Major Areas of Responsibility:

Education

  • Assist MOCA Educators in supervising and ensuring a safe and healthy environment, both physically and mentally, during instructional time at MOCA’s Teen Art Force. This includes accurately tracking attendance and assisting the students with hands-on arts activations.
  • Track and assist in managing the inventory of art and outreach supplies in assistance of the Education Department, and ensuring materials are organized and prepped for both onsite and offsite instruction.
  • Provide interdepartmental data entry support.
  • Set up studio prior to activations and ensure studio is properly cleaned afterward including but not limited to assembling tables and chairs and reorganizing or cleaning used materials.
  • Conduct weekend youth education programs and assist with public workshop programs, including ensuring a smooth classroom experience, accurate sign in and excellent guest service.
  • Provide support for any offsite programs as scheduled, including outreach programs with Education Department, workshops, or other events.

Front Desk

  • Perform general reception duties, greeting the public, special guests, members, and groups in a cheerful, positive manner at all times.
  • Process cash and credit card transactions for admissions, merchandise sales, program and membership fees, through the museum’s point of sale systems (Altru) with accuracy. This includes capturing accurate statistical, marketing, and membership data, including zip codes and email addresses, and issue reports to senior management.
  • Maintain and provide accurate, up to date information about MOCA, exhibitions, programs, memberships, and services, both in person and over the telephone.
  • Inform guests of the museum’s guidelines and enforce them when necessary including restricting umbrellas, backpacks and other larger items from entering the galleries
  • Answer general phone inquiries and/or transfer callers to the appropriate staff member. Take and distribute messages as needed.
  • Assist with Shop merchandise projects such as tagging, labeling, and restocking
  • Restock frontline desk materials and maintain organized workspaces

In Gallery:

  • Warmly greet guests entering the assigned exhibition space while verifying their paid admission.
  • Offer information about the artworks and artists
  • Lead exhibition tours and attending tour training with the Education Department.
  • Monitor all activity within the assigned gallery area to prevent any potential damage to the artwork.
  • Holds responsibility for the appearance of gallery, reporting any discrepancies to the Guest Experience Manager, such as but not limited to: lights, artwork, electronics, and any building needs.
  • Kindly enforce gallery guidelines such as photography rules, food and drink restrictions, etc. and seek assistance from security if a problem escalates beyond training.

General:

  • Interact effectively and professionally with fellow employees, program participants, supervisors, staff, instructors and the general public.
  • Punctuality and regular attendance are essential functions of this position.
  • Provide general support cross departmentally for MOCA public programs and special events.
  • Attend and participate in select meetings and trainings within the museum.
  • Assist with other duties as required and assigned.

Qualifications

  • Positive team player with excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and conflict resolution.
  • General knowledge in or an interest learning about the arts or arts education.
  • Ability to work under general direction.
  • Ability to process information accurately and within a deadline.
  • Aptitude for performing work requiring close attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize workload and to change priorities on short or little notice.
  • Experience in a customer facing role.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Desired

  • Fluency in Haitian Creole and/or Spanish.
  • Experience in cash handling with knowledge of Point-of-Sale systems.
  • Ability to exhibit the energy and physical stamina to work with children and adults of varying ages.
  • Ability to deal with stressful conditions in a calm and professional manner.
  • Skills to work with children and the public by demonstrating patience and enthusiasm.

Terms: This is a part-time, hourly position, not to exceed 29 hours a week. Weekend availability is required with some evening duties as needed. A level 2 background check will be required upon offer of employment.
