What are the responsibilities and job description for the Museum Preparator / Art Handler position at Museum of Craft and Design?
The Museum of Craft and Design is seeking applications for our pool of Preparators/Art Handlers to assist in installation and deinstallation of exhibitions 2-3 times yearly. These are temporary, full-time positions, typically for 2-4 week periods, with an hourly wage of $25-35, based on experience. Our next installation window is April 21-May 9, 2025. We hire preparators as employees of the museum, and prioritize candidates who demonstrate interest and ability to return to consecutive installations, which are scheduled far in advance.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Handles and packs current exhibition
- Prepares exhibition space, including setting of moveable walls, painting and dressing
- Installs a variety of 2D, 3D and AV works to the specification of our curatorial staff and team leaders with museum-level care, cleanliness and safety
- Works with registrar to record condition reports
- Works fluidly between independent and shared responsibilities
REQUIREMENTS
- Available five days a week, Monday to Friday, 9am-5:30pm, during the installation window
- Minimum 1-3 years experience art installation or handling in a museum, gallery or nonprofit space, or equivalent private company
- Clean and efficient wall and surface preparation and painting skills
- Expertise handling 2D, 3D and AV artworks, including packing, crating and storing
- Knowledge of load bearing on variety of 2D and 3D mounting surfaces
- Demonstrable eye for high level of detail work
- Good communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a small team
- Ability to take directions, carry out complex tasks, prioritize time and improvise when necessary
- Ability to lift 50 lbs
- Experience and ability to operate hand and power tools (drill, palette jack, laser level, and various hand tools)
