What are the responsibilities and job description for the Security Supervisor position at Museum of Fine Arts?
Reporting to Protective Services management, the supervisors play a critical role in supervising teams of security guards who are responsible for observing and reporting activities throughout Museum’s property.
A key component of the role is leadership, and supervisors are expected to counsel, coach and motivate security guards to obtain optimum performance. Supervisors must demonstrate high performance, and act as a role model and promote a positive team environment.
The Museum’s standards and policies are critical to both the visitor experience and the daily operation. The Supervisor is responsible for ensuring all security guards adhere to all policies and procedures and are properly trained before being assigned to a post.
In the event of an emergency, supervisors are required to respond and take charge of the guard force and visitors during the incident. Their role also includes daily report writing, guard scheduling and other logistics, performance management, and collaboration with the Command Center to maintain safety and security each shift.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervise, guide and motivate security guards during their shift, ensuring they are alert, prepared, and perform their duties effectively throughout their shifts. Escalate work performance issues to the proper personnel when necessary.
- Identify unusual visitor behaviors, suspicious activity and potential threats and make informed decisions in stressful situations.
- Monitor security guard operations and conduct routine security checks to ensure the safety of artworks, exhibits, and museum facilities. Respond to incidents, emergencies, or violations in a timely and effective manner. Conduct Museum opening and closing procedures as necessary.
- Ensure compliance of all security protocols, museum policies, and safety regulations to be adhered to by the security guards. Have full knowledge of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the MFA and the Museum Independent Security Union. Ensure this contract is respected and adhered to at all times.
- De-escalate conflicts with professionalism and tact.
- Provide training and development support for security guards, ensuring they understand security procedures, emergency response, and visitor experience expectations.
- Respond promptly to security breaches, alarms, or any other incidents, documenting actions taken, and reporting issues to the Command Center and/or Protective Services management as needed. lead and take charge of assigned areas during building evacuations and other emergencies.
- Assist Museum visitors by providing directions, answering questions, and ensuring a safe and pleasant environment. Receive, address, and record accolades, comments and complaints from visitors. Present a positive customer service demeanor at all times including smiling and greeting visitors. Ensure security guards do the same.
- Supervise security guards, ensuring adequate coverage during every shift, including special events or exhibitions. Ensure post orders are up to date on each post. Ensure security officers understand and comply with post and special orders, department policies and operating procedures. Holds self and team accountable with strong attention to detail and high standards.
- Perform equipment checks to ensure security officers maintain the proper uniform and carry required equipment. Oversee the proper use and maintenance of security equipment, such as patrol equipment and radios.
- Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to complete and submit daily security reports, noting any incidents, issues, or concerns that require further attention or follow-up.
- Collaboration with the Command Center is essential to ensure smooth operations and the safety of both people and property. Act as a resource for staff on procedural questions and concerns. Provide solutions and escalate certain issues to the appropriate personnel.
- Effectively deploy and use security technology to support guard force operations.
- Adjust to changing situations in various environments, adapt to fluctuating security needs and perform other duties as directed.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Three to five years related experience
- Demonstrated track record of managing a diverse work force, including hiring, training and motivating staff.
- Must have excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Ability to stand and walk for long periods including using stairs.
- Be able to distinguish standard colors.
- Possess normal hearing and vision correctable to 20/20.
- Ability to hear normal (volume) conversation at a distance of 15 feet.
- Ability to write clear concise preliminary investigative reports, interview witnesses, victims, etc.
- Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid, CPR and other related certifications on a yearly basis.
- Physically able to administer First Aid and CPR including carrying first aid equipment and assisting with lifting and moving victims if required.
- Outstanding customer service skills and the ability to remain calm in the face of diverse and high stress encounters i.e.: fire, medical emergency, extremely aggravated visitors, and workplace violence situations.
- Possess basic computer skills and be able to learn software applications used by the department.
- Ability to use radios, phones, patrol equipment, and other equipment that may be assigned. Must have basic computer skills.
- This position may require evening, weekend, and holiday shifts based on the Museum’s hours of operation and special events.
- Ability to work in a high-traffic environment and deal with potentially stressful or challenging situations.

Full-Time Salary, 40 hours per week
$28.85 per hour
