What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Accountant position at Museum of Fine Arts?
Position Overview: Under the general direction of the Controller and the direct supervision of the Assistant Controller, the Staff Accountant plays a key role in supporting the Finance Department by ensuring accurate and timely financial record-keeping for the Museum. This position is primarily responsible for assisting with daily accounting tasks, including the preparation of journal entries, account reconciliations and financial reports. In addition the Staff Accountant contributes to the overall success of the Financial Team.
Essential Functions:
- Provide support to the Controller, Assistant Controller and senior management in the development, documentation and monitoring of Museum accounting policies to comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and internal controls.
- Actively participate in General Ledger month-end & year-end close process by preparing and entering journal entries, performing account analysis and reconciling accounts.
- Prepare monthly reconciliations for assigned general ledger accounts, including but not limited to cash accounts, inventories and other balance sheet accounts.
- Assist with preparing financial statements and reporting for management, including monthly, quarterly and annual reports.
- Assist in the completion of the annual external audit
- Prepare required reports as needed to federal, state, city and other regulatory bodies, including tax filings, licenses and other compliance purposes.
- Perform other duties required, including ad-hoc reporting and preparation of surveys.
- Participate in procedure and system upgrades and implementations to improve financial systems and processes.
Requirements & Characteristics:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
- Minimum 3 years of experience in related industry
- Strong understanding of GAAP
- Critical thinker and self-starter with ability to work independently, problem-solve and prioritize tasks
- Communicate clearly and effectively, complete work accurately and meet deadlines
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel, Word. Oracle a plus
- Detailed oriented with a focus on accuracy
- Discretion in handling sensitive and confidential information
- A collaborative style and team approach essential

Salary Range
Full-time Salary, 35 hours per week
Starting Salary: $60,000 - $70,000
